Can’t Separate Pages from Each Other
-
My blog is astrologybites.wordpress.com.
I searched “pages” but I’m not finding my problem listed there. I added a page widget to my sidebar, called it “recommended reading,” listed some books under it, and it worked just fine. But when I wanted to add another page, and call it “prediction challenges,” after I saved it, my “recommended reading list” was under it.
Also, when I looked at my original “recommended reading list,” my “prediction challenges” header was listed under it. In other words, both page headers are listing both page names together. I’ve tried moving them away from each other, but it didn’t help. I’ve also tried linking the “new” child with its parent, but under attributes when I click on where it says “Main Page (No Parent),” to try to get to “prediction challenges,” prediction challenges isn’t there–only the names of books.
What am I doing wrong? I’m getting so confused.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

By default pages are listed in alphabetical order. You can change the order by assigning an ‘Order’ number in the page editor screen (or Quick Edit under each page in the lists of pages) and then set your Pages widget to display pages sorted by order.

Thank you for your effort, but that’s not the problem. I want two (2) parent pages:
one called “Recommended Reading”
one called “Prediction Challenges.”Under “Recommended Reading,” I’d like 3 child pages (to start), each one being a page with a book description.
Under “Prediction Challenges,” I’d like to put countless pages of images so they don’t take over my main blog page. Sort of like Live Journal puts stuff “under the cut.”
If you look at my sidebar at both “Prediction Challenges,” and “Recommended Reading,” you’ll see that’s not what I got. I don’t know how to fix it.

I think all the mods went to bed, so I’m going to go try to figure this out on my own because I want to launch this blog when I get up in the morning. Or afternoon. G’night all.

The title you give to the Pages widget is just the title, not a page.
Now, there are two ways you can do what you’re looking for:
a. Create a page titled “Recommended Reading” and one titled “Prediction Challenges”; then you can set the one or the other as the parent to your other pages. In that case, use the Pages widget only once (titling it “Pages” or whatever): your child pages will show up indented under the one or the other parent page.
b. Don’t create those two parents (and don’t set any parent to the other pages); add the Pages widget twice, titling the one RR and the other PC; get the ID numbers of the other pages; use them in the “Exclude” box of the widgets, to exclude the books pages from the PC widget and the image pages from the RR widget.
Solution b obviously not recommended if you’re planning on creating “countless” image pages.
(For the images, there’s another possibility as well: instead of really separate pages, you can put everything in one page, and split the content using the next-page tag – see here:
http://support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/ ) -
panaghiotisadam, thanks for your help. I tried both of these options, and neither will work for me. But the next page cut is going to be a life saver! I’m off to try it out right now. That may solve the problem. I’ll get back to you and let you know.

You’re welcome.
(Why won’t option “a” work?)
Yet another alternative: create RR page and PC page, write links to the other pages in the RR and PC pages themselves. In that case you won’t use the Pages widget at all: you’ll make RR and PC show in the sidebar either via Links > Add New, or via a Text widget.

Shoot. That didn’t work. I thought it would create new pages for the part after the cut to appear on, and leave page numbers behind to click on, but it didn’t do any of that. I guess it might have sent what was behind the cut so somewhere, but I have no idea where.
Option A didn’t work because the option was one or the other, not both. I want to keep RR and PC completely separate from each other. They’re two different things, worlds apart.
I’m so tired. It’s nearly 5:30 in the morning here and I need to get some sleep. I’ll check back when I get up to see if you’ve left me any more messages. Thanks very much for all your help.

“I thought it would create new pages for the part after the cut to appear on, and leave page numbers behind to click on”. Yes, that’s what the nextpage tag does. Are you sure you pasted it in the html page editor?

Yeeeeessssss! **happy dance** THANK YOU! The code for the page split (yes, I put it in the HTML area) didn’t work. It hid the contents of the next page without leaving a link behind for finding it. However, up in the kitchen sink, between the “break link” icon and the “proofreader / spellchecker” icon, is a “break page” icon that works great and solved my problem. **high five** Y’all give awesome support. Thanks again!
