Can't set my home page to be the most recent blog version of text and images etc

  • Unknown's avatar

I am technologically challenged—and have spent 3 hours trying to simply set up my featured photo and most recent blog as my default page. I’ve saved, updated, published etc. etc. but it reverts to an earlier version without my added photo and with replications and absence of new text.

The most recent version is there under “Archives” but I can’t seem to set that so it comes up as my home page.

I may eventually upgrade but first want to at least learn how to use the basics of the free version.

This stems from a trip to Burma (I got back January 29) that I feel greatly deserves a blog.

I am very frustrated—I just want to set my home page to include the photo and want and to include the most recent content including the updated images and text. It seems like this should be easy but I can’t get it to work. I cannot decipher the support postings about changing plugins etc.

I get basic editing of text and images but why can’t I just set my home page to be my latest version with all the other stuff stuck relegated to previous versions? Instead, the old version comes up and the “archived” version which is the latest version has to be clicked on under “Archives.”

    Totally stymied.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are stymied because if I’m reading this correctly, you have not only chosen one of the most complicated themes we have but you are also trying to do the impossible.

You can choose EITHER your stream of blog Posts OR a static Page for the blog to open on. You cannot choose a single blog Post.

Thank you. I did try to set the blog to open to a static page–but must have missed something.

I don’t understand your ref to having selected one of the most complicated themes–I just started writing and adding ephotos–I did not consciously choose a theme.

But I still do not understand why I could not set my own feature photo and have the blog open on that photo as the feature at the top of the page.

If I understand, I should be able to set it to a static intro page with a photo I’ve taken–and then have subsequent blogs referenced by links.

But I am still not clear about something–if I am writing a narrative—as I am doing for my recent Burma trip–can’t that just be a single blog–the Burma blog in this case?

It is going to be written over time but I don’t want it to be a “new” blog every time I pick up the narrative.

Thanks for patiently addressing these questions–I realize these seem absurdly obvious to those familiar with WordPress.

    Thanks again.

You really seriously don’t want to do that. There is a MUCH easier way.

    Start with this: http://learn.wordpress.com

Then yes, make new blog posts, multiple posts. Tons of posts. If they’re all about Burma, then use Burma as a category. Then if you’re using the Category widget, someone can click on Burma and see all your Burma posts at once. You do NOT want to delete old posts or just keep editing one and adding to it.

Once you’ve got that down and understand how it works, you can use a Custom Menu to link to the Burma category in the header. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/

I will def take another look at the “Learn WordPress” info.

I had spent about 30 minutes looking at it but will look again.

Somehow missed the key role of Category widget etc.

I will play around with that today.

There is hope for the technologically challenged!

    Thanks again,

    Richard
