Can't set up blog
-
I am adding this topic for a friend. My friend has been trying to set up a blog on WordPress, but every name he tries to do it, WordPress want to add ‘home’ to the URL, and my friend doesn’t want it to say *name.home.wordpress.com, he wants it to say *name.wordpress.com as is usually the way it does. If it doesn’t say ‘home’ in the URL it adds a string of numbers instead, and he doesn’t want that either. He doesn’t believe it’s because the names are taken, because he randomly typed in something like ‘mmnbhgftsrvacsfer4646575yhmnnmnnnnn4747474748484nnnb’ and it still added ‘home’ to the URL. HELP!

Hi –
That is odd behavior. I’d like to try and replicate it so I can learn more. What is the friend’s user name?
They can create an account with out registering a site.

My friend hasn’t got a username yet, which is why I’m doing this for him. He’s trying to get one with a blog. The problem is what I have mentioned above.

Hi dolphinriver,
We offer addresses containing
home.blogbut there should also be the option to choose one without it.Would it be possible for you to make a screenshot of what happening when trying to choose an address? Please include the whole page and upload it to your Media Library, that may gives us a clue as to what is happening.
Thanks!

There wasn’t an option for one without. The only options were for paid versions and the one with ‘home’ or a mass of numbers. I will ask him to get a screen shot, but I haven’t got a blog as it’s my husbands blog, and I am not an admin, I can only post, so I will ask my husband to upload it to his media library. I will reply here when it is all done. Thanks.

or a mass of numbers
Note that the default for free sites with the .wordpress.com extension initially suggests an address with loads of numbers, but you don’t have to accept that as set in stone. If you continue to experiment in the search box you should be able to choose a free address with your preferred wording by putting perhaps just one number at the end. Taking time to experiment further by adding an additional word to your preferred address often dispenses with the numbers altogether.

My friend has managed to do it now. He was using the incognito window and thinks that may have been the problem, so he went to the normal window and used Chrome and has managed to get it all set up now, with the name he wanted, and without ‘home’ or numbers in it. He says his only options previously were with ‘home’ in the URL, but today it worked without having the added ‘home’! Thank you.
