Can't Transfer Domain Without Registry Key

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello all, we are trying to transfer a domain away from WordPress.com to a new registrar (inmotionhosting).
We were able to unlock the domain and requested an Auth code which came via email no problem.
But, we also need the registry key from WP.com and I have spent a few hours looking through forums trying to find where this might be attainable in my account panel, but nothing. And, it looks like there is no wordpress.com direct contact info here, so we are stuck.
My hope is that somebody from wp proper see’s this post and can help us out, but I’ll take anyone’s input at this point.

    Many thank!

    Hello there!

Just checked out the whois details of your domain. It seems your domain has already been transferred to inmotion.

Just to confirm, I checked out the domain transfer documentation of inmotion hosting. In case the registry key issue still persists, you must visit the website of inmotion’s partner website to get the same.

Please note that the registry key in question should be generated from inmotion’s side.

Here’s the link to the inmotion support article that explains what you’d have to transfer the domain:
    http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/domain-names/registrations-and-transfers/how-to-unlock-domain-name-retrieve-authorization-code

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers!
    Hari.

    Thanks, almost helps.

I’ve transferred a few domains to inmotion in the past and have always gotten the registry key from places like Bluehost and Godaddy to move away from their service.

What is going on there is the name servers were changed to point at them (inmotion), but no actual domain registry transfer has taken place. I can’t proceed with that until I get a Registry key from wp.com or what my whois shows, and that’s wildwestdomains.com, who keeps telling us wp.com is the registrar.

    Confusing.

    Hi instruments4africa,

When a domain is transfered we provide the Auth key (also known as an EPP code) to allow the transfer to take place. A registry key is provided by the registrar you are transferring to.

Our records show the domain, i4africa.org was successfully transfered away from WordPress.com.

If you have any other questions let us know.
