Hi there,
There are 2 options to connect your domain with WordPress.com. You can either map or transfer the domain to WordPress.com.
If you map it, the registration will stay with your current provider, so you’ll still need to pay them each year to renew the domain, while at the same time paying WordPress.com for a plan to connect the domain here.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/If you transfer it, the registration itself moves to WordPress.com, and the domain’s annual renewal will be included in your plan’s renewal.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/But as you mentioned, you have just bought the domain, you only have the option to map the domain here as the domain should be at least 60 days old before it can be transferred.
This is standard across all registrars and is a rule set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).You’ll need to buy one of our paid plans from My Site ->Plans whether you transfer or map your domain.

PS: There is no phone support on WordPress.com. The staff and volunteers provide support for free users in the WordPress.com forums, and private support is provided for paid users via live chat and email.
