Can't unfollow a page on a WordPress.com site
-
I’ve been receiving email comment updates for months from a page on a site which I’m evidently not following. According to my subscription management page, I’m neither a follower of the site in question, nor a subscribed to comments on the site. Yet, it is to the subscription management page that I’m taken whenever I attempt to unsubscribe from this site via any of the gazillions of email messages I’ve received from the site, which each contain the following note at the bottom (minus the links):
Want less email? Unsubscribe from all follow-up comments or modify your Subscription Options
When I visit the either the site, or the specific page on the site, from which I’m receiving email comment updates, there is again no indication that I’m following the site. Therefore it is impossible to unfollow the site as described in the
“How to Unfollow a blog if you’re a WordPress.com user” section of the Following Blogs support page. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there!
It might be that someone else made a typo when they tried to subscribe to that blog. Happens to me more often than i would like.dave

Hi @musicdoc1
What is the URL of the page? And at what email address are you receiving the notifications?
Please try clicking the Unsubscribe link while logged out, or in an incognito browser session – if you click the link while logged in it will take you to the subscription options for the email connected to your WordPress.com account, not for a different email if you’re receiving the notifications somewhere else.

Hi kokkieh,
“What is the URL of the page?”
The URL is https://auctionlaw.wordpress.com/questions-comments/. I evidently made a test comment on the site in the course of responding on 9 December 2016 to the support forum topic Page Not Found Error. However, as I’ve mentioned above, I find no evidence either at the site or on my subscription management pages that I’m a follower of the site, or of comments on the site. And at what email address are you receiving the notifications?
At the account email address for my musicdoc1 account.

Amendment:
“I evidently made a test comment on that page…”
When I submitted a test comment on that page, according to my post in the Page Not Found Error topic, an error message appeared at https://auctionlaw.wordpress.com/questions-comments/comment-page-34/#comment-4833.

It’s definitely not in your subscriptions list. I also checked our logs, and it doesn’t show any subscription emails from that site that were recently sent to your email.
Is there any possibility that you used a test account to leave a test comment on that site? If you used an alias address for your Gmail address it would appear that the notification is arriving to your regular email, but in our system it would be tied to the alias address instead. If you expand the FROM section on the email in Gmail you should be able to see that.
Did you try clicking the unsubscribe link in an incognito window like I suggested above?

No, I didn’t do that.

Please redact anything that might be a security risk from the following quote. I’m not sure if this is what you mean by the “FROM” section, but under the sender’s name, the “to me” link opens a drop-down section that begins as follows on the first email received (on 10 December 2016):
from: Auction Law <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>
reply-to: Auction Law <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>
to: (email visible only to moderators and staff)For the latest received email from Auction Law (29 April 2017), the “to me” drop-down section begins similarly, except it has a different comment ID number.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by clicking the link in an incognito window, and I don’t know if I want to describe what my privacy settings are, and what I’ve attempted in this regard, here in a public forum. In a nutshell, it is my understanding that I’m always in a private window when logged in to my email account, because of my FF privacy settings. Can we discuss this privately?
I probably won’t receive your response to this until tomorrow morning. It’s very late here and I’ve got to hit the hay. Thanks again for the help. : )

Okay. Only thing I can think of is to turn it off and back on again :)
So I’ve followed that site with your account and subscribed to email notification (you should have received an email when I did that), and then I unsubscribed you again. Only way to tell if it worked is to wait until there’s another comment on that site, so let’s see.

I mean open the Unsubscribe link in a browser session where you’re logged out of your WordPress.com account and where your browser also won’t have any WordPress.com cookies stored.

Thanks. It occurred to me that using a different browser would accomplish the same thing. So I opened the Subscription Options link in a different browser and obtained the same result.
Soon after doing so, and noticing that no further messages had come from the site in question since 29 April, I realized that I might have unsubscribed on that date, or soon after, and forgotten about it. Are you able to see the history of my subscriptions to tell if I was subscribed to that site, when I unsubscribed (if I did), etc.?
I’ll keep an eye on it for a while. Thanks again. : )

There have been other periods of more than five days when I haven’t received an update from that page, so I’m not sure I’ve seen the last of it yet.

I don’t even see an entry in your account’s logs that you subscribed to the site, nevermind an unsubscribe entry, but good idea nonetheless.
I see there were several new comments on the site yesterday which didn’t trigger notifications to your email, so maybe something one of us did worked. Let me know if it you get another one, though.

I see there were several new comments…
That’s good. I hadn’t bothered to check that. Btw, my previous estimate of “gazillions” was slightly high (the secretary being prone to exaggeration). For the record, from 10 December to 29 April I received precisely 61 email updates from that site.

Thanks for that information. As I mentioned above, on December 9 I definitely submitted a test comment on the site, which was never to my knowledge published, but immediately resulted in an error message. While I’ve no recollection of subscribing to the site, I thought I might have done so accidentally, at the Action Bar.
