can't update pages/posts

I’m suddenly finding that often when I make changes to a page or post, the Update button isn’t there. When I try to leave the screen, I get the warning that I’ll lose unsaved changes if I leave without saving but I have no choice because there’s no way to save. This is a sporadic problem but very annoying as I’ve lost a lot of changes. Suggestions?

That’s certainly frustrating. Have you noticed this happening only on the new editor (wordpress.com/post), the classic editor (byjeffburger.wordpress.com/wp-admin), or both? Do you remember the last post/page that this happened on?
Also, if you could recreate this and grab a screenshot, that would be awesome! Screenshot instructions can be found here:
Then, you can just upload the screenshot to your media library here like you would a normal photo:

I believe I’m using only the new editor. This happened in several screens in the last couple of days, including the one in the screenshot I just uploaded. I was able to recreate the problem for the screenshot, but the screenshot doesn’t show everything, since you have to scroll to see the entire page. At any rate, I added the word “test” near the top but then couldn’t save because there was no update button.

On your screenshot, it looks like you’re using the classic editor:
To illustrate the difference a bit more, here are examples of both editors:

Currently, on the classic editor, you have a one-column setup. You can see this option by clicking Screen Options at the top of the page as shown in this screenshot:
The update button is still present, but it’s hidden because the Publish section is currently collapsed. If you click the arrow to expand the Publish section, you should see the button. Here are two screenshots to illustrate the difference:

Thanks so much. That’s all it was—the publish section was collapsed, so Update was hidden. (Why that would start happening all of a sudden I have no idea, but at least it’s easy to deal with.)
