Can’t upgrade after canceling Business hosting

I had a Personal account for years, but decided to upgrade to Business hosting earlier in the week. Then, I decided to downgrade back to Personal, so I canceled my Business hosting on Dec. 11th. But now I’m at the Free hosting option and every time I try to upgrade back to Personal, I get the error message, “Sorry, that plan is not compatible with this site.” (I also got the error message when I experimented and clicked to upgrade to Premium.)
Since I’m now stuck at “Free,” I had to use the Support chat for help and it told me that it usually takes 24 hours for changes to go through after a cancellation. But it’s been over 24 hours and I still can’t upgrade to Personal or Premium. Can I please get some help? Thanks!

Hi there, it’s possible that the downgrade didn’t remove everything that would allow you to run on the Personal plan. Here’s a support article that explains what needs to be done https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/downgrade-your-plan/#downgrading-from-a-business-or-commerce-plan
Sometimes downgrading from business also needs staff assistance, so I’ve gone ahead and flagged your forum thread for their attention. Thanks for your patience.
