Cant upload a link to a pdf suddenly on wordpress.com
-
I am struggling with a simple thing that used to be easy – inserting a link to a pdf document already stored in my media gallery.
The only option I now have is to fully embed the pdf – which i dont want to do
I run a church website http://www.sacredheartteddington.org and for years we have created link (to the newsletters) with download buttons next to each weeks newsletter. Why so hard now.
Can you help. It’s driving me quietly nuts.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I cant see the panel to edit my request for support, so adding here in the reply, I have read the WP.com support resource on this but cant make sense of it. Likewise no answers on the forum here.

Hi there,
To display the link along with a download button, you can use the File block. That block gives you the option whether or not you want the file to embed as well.

Thank you Kokkeih for responding but unfortunately, you haven’t clearly read /understood my problem.
To restate, I know about the File Block option. I am trying to use it, but the ONLY option the File Block gives me is to upload and embed a pdf.
I DO NOT see the File Block option to add text, copy a url nor use the download button, as shown in the wordpress.com support vide.I cannot add an image here to explain (which would be so helpful), so i have added an image to an unpublished page on my site, https://wordpress.com/page/sacredheartteddington.org/8745
I am using chrome on an imac Mojave.

Hello there,
Many thanks for providing that information and the screenshot.
On the same page I’ve added the file block, if you click on the file block, you should see an option as seen below to hide the embed and keep the download text and vice versa:
I hope this helps.

Hi Aleone89, thanks for coming back to me and sharing this.
Firstly, bit alarmed, you could get straight into the blog by clicking on the link I attached! Did the blog open for you without needing password?
And secondly, I can’t make this work on the page. I have successfully hidden the embed as you show in the pdf settings tab, and i’ve shown the download button. But having clicked “copy url”, the block does not have a facility to add the url link to the dokwnload button or to text.
How can this be so complicated?
Could you share the whole process please? Its obviously not covered completely in the resource video. That would really help.

No need to worry, only the staff can access your account to help troubleshoot issues.

I think it might be easier to explain in a 1:1 conversation where we can guide you step-by-step. Please reach out via live chat from https://wordpress.com/help/contact and we’ll take it from there :) You can share a link to this conversation so you don’t have to explain from the beginning.
