Can't upload background,what to do?

Hi,
Hope that someone can give me a hand.
I am about to start a blog and was looking for a simple theme to which I can upload a background.I do realize some customizing can’t be done unless you pay.
I have chosen the theme SemPress and I am unable to upload a background,not sure if it is my issue or simply not a possibility at all.
I would ideally like to keep this theme but otherwise can someone suggest a simple theme(or various themes)that will let you upload a background???

There are many themes that do allow for custom backgrounds – no upgrade required and Pilcrow is among them. See here http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/custom-background/
In your theme the background > Appearance > Background is the edging it is not the background behind the text in posts and pages. To chnage that requires a custom design upgrade.

Hello,
You can do this with the SemPress theme in the the Customize feature ( Appearance->Customize->BG Image). After you select an image you can then click Save in the bottom right of the screen. Cheers!
