Can't upload images.

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2015/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
Is the error. When I check my hosting site, there are upload folders named for the last calendar years I uploaded files. I had just logged in and had to update WP and themes. I had to provide my FTP info. Not sure why. I had to reset my FTP password, but that got it done.
I am now stuck. And I’m a scrub. So I won’t be changing anything on my FTP folders to 777. I found over 7000 posts on this subject, and nothing that I understand.
Any thoughts?
