@buffaloed
Is your image one of these file types – jpg, jpeg, png, gif ?
What is the size of the image file?
Have you chosen an image that does not have any transparency in it?
Have you pre-sized the image to be 128 pixels x 128 pixels square prior to uploading it?
http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/27/what-is-an-avatar/Unless yours is a “private” blog, please link your wordpress.com username to your wordpress.com blog. Click on this page on the top right hand corner on “view your profile”, click on “edit this information” locate “website” and enter your wordpress.com blog url there. Then click “Update Profile” to save the change.

The other thing brought up a while ago is do not use anything in the file name but letters and numbers. No spaces, no dashes, no underscores, or any type of special character or punctuation (well except for the dot between the file name and the extension). Also make sure that the file name has an extension. In other words, “myphoto.jpg rather than just “myphoto”. I would also keep the file name short, say 8 characters plus the dot and the extension.

Thumbs up for the additional points – I’ll have to make a copy and paste version very soon … lol :) -

It’s one of those things that I always forget until about 10 or 20 comments have been posted.

Such forgetfulness is why volunteers develop copy and paste answers. That is, aside from the fact, that they do cut down on time spent on typing. (Time for lunch – mmmm homemade soup and buns – I’m starving.)

Yes, the ends of the fingers do get tired, and a file with copy and paste answers means you don’t have to go searching for links as well. I’m going to start one.

I’ve uploaded several images using the criteria you stated and nothing. I have a MacBook with Safari and Firefox and it won’t work in either of those so I opened Windows XP using Parallels and tried in Explorer….. still no tool to crop the image. I can see the image but I can’t select part of it to crop.

There seem to be some problems with avatars that staff are working on. I’m not surprised that you had trouble with your safari browser though http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/20/im-using-safari-and-i-have-problems/ I am surprised that you had no success with firefox or IE.
Have you tried logging out, clearing your browser, cache and cookies and then logging in again? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/06/force-refresh/
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=8179Staff do monitor these threads and will get to your blog as soon as they can. Thanks for posting your details here.

@buffaloed
With avatars, I would size or crop the image to 128×128 in an image editing program of some sort and then uploading it. That’s the easiest way.
