Can’t upload .pdf files
-
I am trying to upload several .pdf files, but after they say they are uploaded, it is to a blank page. I am new here, so maybe I am uploading them wrong, but I did check through all the “how-tos” already. Also, it says that I am using 26% of 50 megs for 4 blank documents and one page of text that actually did upload.
Is there a topic for uploading .pdf files? Are they any different than uploading pics?
-
they shouldn’t be any different, i’ve been able to upload them just fine.
yu can go to Manage > Uploads and delete the files that aren’t working.
what size (how many MB) are the files you’re uploading?
-
I have tried deleting and uploading them several different times. After I hit “upload” is there something else I’m supposed to do?
They are between 2-4 megs each.

Hi Jen,
I had a very similar problem. I uploaded the pdf links and then SOME of my blog viewers said they got a blank page. Yet it worked fine for me when I clicked the link.
By accident I managed to replicate the problem. It seems to happen if you have a slow Internet connection or an overloaded network. (I admit it – this happened to me because I had five computers eating up my network bandwidth with downloads, including torrents. As soon as I stopped some of these downloads, the problem vanished.)
It happens with pdf files because your computer first loads Adobe Acrobat, then the file (which is usually something big). Too much to handle; bogs down, can’t load the page.
So – it may be a bandwidth problem. You would have to see what else is going on with your network, your ISP, etc etc… (and of course, now everyone in the Asian part of the globe is having problems because the earthquake in Taiwan snapped a cable!_)

A quick check shows that Jen is (or was) coming off of an Earthlink cable modem out of Texas. It shouldn’t have been an issue but what you say does make sense.
The only *.pdfs I have on this system are over 15 megs in size and that’s over the file limit size we have here.
Now that I’m thinking about it, the 2-4 megs are oveer as well since I believe the limit is 1.5 megs but I may be wrong.

Well I had the same problem as Jen with a pdf file. Its a 1 MB file and the internet connection is pretty good. Also it says uploaded and using 2% of my space. Will delete and maybe try again.
Also what happened was that while the file was uploading it showed error on the panel left below. Maybe some relevance.

drmike – Hi. My visitors are experiencing a similar sounding problem trying to open or download PDFs around 2-3MB. They display an error saying, “the file is damaged and could not be repaired”. It seems very intermittent, with some people managing the downloads fine, others completely stuck. I’ve tried different browsers and old and new versions of Acrobat and there is no obvious pattern.
Are you able to tell me if there is a file size limit? I’m using WordPress to host the site.
Thanks.

Just checked the WordPress FAQ which says… “Individual files up to around 8MB can be uploaded but this will depend on your connection speed.”
Certainly doesn’t explain the problems my users are finding.

dr mike – Thanks for the speedy response. Tried the ‘right-click and save target’, but same error. I did apply security settings to the PDFs to prevent them being altered, so I will see if removing that helps.
Most problems seem to be files 6 through to 9. (7-9 are all over 3MB, but 6 is under 2MB)

No dial-up. Fairly decent broadband. I’ve just made a new ‘documents’ page, re-saved all the problem files – #6-10, without any security settings, (this is done in full version Acrobat), and renamed them. I get them all but #9, opening and downloading fine… Wierd! I did check all the files on the main page when I published the post and all worked fine. However, clearing my browser cache and trying again, I too have had the problems.

Silly question. Can you open up #8 on your own desktop before uploading it?
Only thing I can think of is deleteing #8 from Dashboard -> Manage -> Uploads and reuploading it and relinking to it.
In the back of my mind, I’m wondering if some sort of security scan is catching something within the file and changing it. We (menaing me and the hosting that I do outside of here) had an issue with a PHPNuke module a long while back that kept false positiving AntiVirus programs like crazy.

“Can you open…” Not that silly. I keep re-checking myself! All files open ok locally. I put them up temporarilly on a friends website and they download ok from there. However, that’s just me trying. Would WordPress have a problem if a number of people were trying to download a files at the same time?
-
Also, in answer to your other question, I have deleted all the original files and uploaded new, renamed versions. I even put them on a new Page so they were off the main post area. Still no joy…

Perhaps the best course of action to take at this juncture is to send a feedback to staff including as much information as possible and requesting their assistance.

I made a page on another website and placed all the files there. There doesn’t seem to be any issue about reading or downloading them from this other site. This would suggest something is happening in WordPress…
