can’t upload photos
-
I have been trying all morning to upload pictures, and none of them will upload. I get this little rectangular box and a smaller box with an “X” in it. What is that? My limit counter says I have used 4% of my 5 megabytes. Any Ideas. They are jpgs.

Try doing a forum search for “upload” or “images”. There are a lot of threads on the issue because you’re not the only one having problems. There are several suggestions floating around in the different threads.

can’t find anything beyond “wait till less traffic”.
But, if I transfer them to GIF format, they upload (and look like crap). This is real nice.

There are a lot of suggestions out there:

When creating and uploading an image to wordpress.com here are some basics worth remembering:
(1) Be sure your image is one of these file types – jpg, jpeg, png, gif (Note that bmp’s cannot be uploaded due to size).
(2) Do not use anything in the file name except letters and numbers. Use no spaces, no dashes, no underscores, or any type of special character or punctuation, except for the dot between the file name and the extension. Also make sure that the file name has an extension.
(3) If you are using iPhoto, then use the “export” function under the file menu to export the image to your desktop before trying to upload it to WordPress.
(4) If you are not using the image in thumbnail size, make sure that the image is not too wide for the post area in your particular theme. You can find maximum image widths for the most popular themes here: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/
(5) Optimize your images so that your blog pages will load faster. See http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/08/optimise-your-images/
(6) How to upload pictures in posts: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/16/how-do-i-upload-pictures/

I am also having problems uploading pictures recently, actually in the last couple of days. I am able to upload one or two, then when I upload any more, a picture doesn’t even show up only a little X with the picture name. I’m not doing anything different than I did successfully in the past and the picture sizes are small. I’m only at 38% full so I don’t think that size of blog is an issue. I have been uploading pictures on my site for a couple of months and haven’t had any problems until now. Is there a problem with the the site that is being resolved, should I remain patient, or can I do something else to get pictures uploaded?

@bryanandcarol
If you are having problems uploading images then the most likely causes are:
* The image is too large (filesize)
* Your connection is slow
* There is a problem between your computer and the WordPress server. (You do not have a direct line here. Your connection will go through any number of hubs before it gets here and one problem along that line will cause you problems.)
Reference: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/29/i-cannot-upload-images/Provided yours is not a private blog, then would you please post the url for your blog so we can see what you are talking about?
Which browser and version of it are you using?
Have you received a recent McAfee or other anti-virus or security program update? If so did you “whitelist” wordpress.com? -
Earlier today, I posted five images to my blog at
http://dianealdred.comThe latest post is called ‘Check, mate’.
I have just noticed that the last image (rosebuddiane1.jpg) has disappeared and will not load. It was definitely loading earlier because someone commented on it and I could see it.
If I browse for it, it has uploaded OK but it will not ‘send to editor’. I have tried to re-upload it ( and tried re-naming it and re-uploading) and I can do this successfully but when I ‘send to editor’ only the title appears.
I am using Firefox 2.0.0.8 and Mac OS 10.4.10
Any ideas?

Thanks for your quick reply. Our site is http://www.bryanandcarol.wordpress and I’m not sure of the browser or version we’re using. The files weren’t too big earlier and we had no problems uploading pictures until the last couple of days. We did get an update on Norton recently, how can we check if we put wordpress.com on Whitelist? Why can I upload some pictures, but not others, all approx the same size?

I am experiencing similar problems at donnacooks.wordpress.com with photo uploading. I can upload the first few photos fine, but the rest come in as little red x’s. Furthermore, when this happens is sometimes makes the previously successfully uploaded photos also show up as red x’s. help!

I’m having the same problem at http://amerrierworld.wordpress.com/ , specifically with http://amerrierworld.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/upclosesr1.jpg

@bryanandcarol
I think we volunteers have exhausted our supply of advice and that you need staff intervention. http://wordpress.com/contact-support/@donnaaries
I think your blog needs staff intervention as well. http://wordpress.com/contact-support/@amerrierworld
Using firefox 2.0.0.8 I see the image you linked above displaying in the post without any problem. What I do not see is your custom image header.Have you considered turning off “snap previews” so your page loads more quickly? This can be done here -> Presentation -> Extras
uncheck the “enable snap previews anywhere on this blog” option and then click “update extras” to save. -
Thanks for that :-) (I’m not entirely sure what snap previews are, but turning them off certainly seems to have made my pages load more quickly). I still can’t see the image I linked to in my previous post, but if you can see it then it must be floating about somewhere! (can you see my custom image header now, though …?)
Thanks for your help :-) -
@amerrierworld
YES! I can see your header now. :)
Also the blog is loading much faster.(1) Reducing page loading time
If you would like to reduce page loading time even more (especially important to readers on dial-up service) then you could limit the number of posts you have on your front page here -> Options -> Reading
Blog Pages
Show at most: ___posts
Change the number and click “Update Options”.(2) Linking your username to your blog
If you would like to link your worpress.com username to your blog then click on
“Welcome, amerrierworld View your profile” on the top right hand corner of this forum page. Click on “edit this information” and scroll down to “website”. In “website” enter your wordpress.com blog url into the field and then click “update options” to save the change.Happy blogging. :)

@merrierworld
YAY! I just clicked your username and connected to your blog where I see lots of delightful mouth-watering recipes. :) -
Thanks for helping. We are travelling and as soon as we are in WIFI range during the day, we will contact wordpress support to see if they can help. We were able to upload a couple of pictures before we had more problems. When we contacted Norton we followed their suggestions and turned off different virus, etc. protection at different times and it didn’t seem to help, even when norton was completely turned off. Now some of the picture comes up as a thumbnail on the blog but can’t be enlarged (see the pic of the Grand Princess on Oct 25 post). Our site is http://www.bryanandcarol.wordpress.com We will keep you posted on what we find out and how it’s resolved.

You should stop posting to more that one thread on the same topic. I answered you in the first one you posted. Please go there and stop posting here.
