Can’t Upload Word Documents Anymore – Just Dead Links

  • Unknown's avatar

I have repeatedly attempted to upload a Word document to one of my pages and it isnt working. I click “Post to Site” once it has been uploaded but when it appears on the page it is just text with no link to the document.

Any ideas of what I’m potentially doing wrong or what could be the problem?

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I would belpful if you directed us to the dead link in question. All links I tried worked perfectly.

They’re dead so I just delete them. It just says the title of the document without having anything attache to it.

We can’t help you if we can’t see what’s happening. Maybe you could make a test page and upload a word doc onto that? Then you can delete it when the test is over.

    I just uploaded one. http://inearnestexpectation.wordpress.com/resources/

Its the first article at the top that is just writing.

    Thanks so much.

“…the first article at the top…”? is that “The Theological and Emotional Implications of the Doctrine of Adoption”? That’s working. Or is it “The Doctrine of the Happiness of God Sess…”? You need to be a bit more specific.

Sorry, I thought it was relatively obvious. It’s the one at the top that doesnt work. The second one down (Which is the adoption one) works. The first one, that is, the one at the top (“Happiness”) is the one that won’t work.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. Any ideas?

Well, this is what the code looks like:

<p style="text-align:left;"><strong>The Doctrine of the Happiness of God Sess. 2: Biblical Entry Points </strong></p>
<p style="text-align:left;"> <a href="http://inearnestexpectation.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/the-emotional-and-theological-implications-of-the-doctrine-of-adoption.doc">The Theological and Emotional Implications of the Doctrine of Adoption</a></p>
    <p style="text-align:left;"><a href="http://inearnestexpectation.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/calling_zeitgeist_into_account1.doc">Calling the Zeitgeist Film Into Account</a></p>

In my opinion, this is related to the recent change where the URL is not displayed along with the image uploaded, but it COULD also be related to the Bolding. Did you set it as Bold when you uploaded it? Or did that happen on its own?

I think you may have to contact staff via your dashboard.

Try uploading the document again, but this time, before clicking “Insert into post”, click “File URL” under where it says “Link URL”. WordPress did some change to Settings > Media this weekend and all images/media that are inserted into posts are unclickable by default. This is to allow more options for the user, who is supposed to know that he or she needs to edit the appropriate settings before uploading.

    @raincoaster
I think this is related to the default unclickable thumbnail issue that so many have reported. It seems to affect all kinds of media, since the default setting for Link URL is “None”. I appreciate the new feature, but why can’t WordPress tell us? They seem so eager to promote all kinds of new features in the “Nesw” section, but not this one. Still testing and waiting for user response maybe…

I think it should be reported to staff ASAP. It does not seem as if they’ve left people any options at all for non-image media. I mean, the upload process should be able to tell the difference between an uploaded DOC file and an image, you’d think.

How can you contact wordpress staff?

    I really appreciate your help.

Please send the file extensions – “word doc” isn’t helpful, a full extension is.

My issue with the word document has been sorted. I had a question unrelated to this that I need to ask staff.

@raincoaster: wpvstp is right. The recent changes in the uploader and the media settings apply to all types of media. It’s the same with a doc or a pdf file as it is with an image: you have to click “File URL” to get the link, and/or set this option as the default.
