can't use my usual font anymore

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t use the “bookman old” font on my pages anymore. I used to be able to copy it in easily from my word processor but now the text only shows on the screen in the default font. When previewed it looks like a sans serif arial, slightly bolded. This font clashes with all the other articles on my site ; this formatting makes newer articles appear to be from a totally different web site.

    It also removes line spaces.

    My site is greytarticles.wordpress.com.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

I can’t use the “bookman old” font on my pages anymore.

Would you be able to provide me with an example of an older page that has the correct font and with the title of a draft/newer pages that has the unwanted font? I’ll then be able to dig a bit deeper into this.

Have you switched to our new editor since you noticed this change? It’s worth noting that, with the new editor, font is displayed in Open Sans while viewing it in the editor but will change to the theme’s font when published.

Since you started posting again, there may have been some underlying changes to how formatting is retained when copying and pasting from your word processor. Could you try using plain text mode when pasting to see if this helps? We have a guide on how to do this here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/#plain-text

If you can let me know those extra details then I can continue to troubleshoot this issue with you and help get to the bottom of what’s going on.

    It also removes line spaces.

We’ve had a few reports of line breaks being removed in the new editor and I can definitely understand that it must be frustrating. Could you confirm that it is the new editor you’re working with? In addition, I’d be really grateful if you could let me know a few extra details behind your particular issue? The following would really help us in troubleshooting this further:

    * Were you working under the Visual tab of your editor? If so, did you switch to the HTML tab at any point?

    * Did the line breaks show the first time you saved your post or did they get removed upon additional saves/edits?

    * Were you trying to add more than one line break?

It’s worth noting that, while we look into fixing this, you can still access the classic editor directly from the following link:
    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

From that link, hover over Posts on the left-hand side and then choose either Add New or All Posts from there. You’ll be able to edit or add posts in the classic editor that way.

If you can let me know those extra details behind your missing line breaks, I’ll add them to the bug report for the new editor.

Here’ sand older one that is the way it’s supposed to be. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/adopters-treasure-chest/crating-how-long-is-too-long/

Here’s a older one that I tried to import again and it changed the font to TNR and then it goes to the default font. It was fine in the original. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=9654&action=edit

    Finally, here’s a new piece. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/?page_id=9657&preview=true

Here it is in plain text pasting. No change. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/?page_id=9657&preview=true

It is in bookman in the wp, comes in as TNR and appears in the default font when previewed. It doesn’t matter if I’m in visual or text mode; it just won’t do it.

I’ve tried it in both visual and text. The line spaces disappear the first time I preview.

I can’t get to the classic (old) editor via the link you provided. I did clear the cache to no avail.

PS I was not trying to add extra lines between paragraphs.

Thanks so much for providing that extra information.

Here’ sand older one that is the way it’s supposed to be. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/adopters-treasure-chest/crating-how-long-is-too-long/

If we take a look under HTML/Text tab while on the editor for that page:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=275&action=edit

You should notice the following opening HTML tags precedes blocks of your text:

    <span style="font-family: Book Antiqua, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">

And the following closing HTML tags comes after blocks of your text:

    </span></span>

These tags used to be automatically copied over when you pasted your content, however, due to changes in our underlying software, they’re now being stripped out automatically.

Would you be able to confirm whether you were copying and pasting to our new editor here:

    https://wordpress.com/post/

Or if you were using our classic editor:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

If you were using the new editor, could you try copying and pasting directly into the classic editor to see if this resolves the problem?

I’ve tried it in both visual and text. The line spaces disappear the first time I preview.

Thanks for confirming. I’ve added this in our report back to the developers.

I have tried posting with both the new and the old methods and it’s still not working. BTW, I use pages, not posts, 99% of the time. I’m using WP for an articles website; I use posts only to announce new articles posted.

Another problem is that I can’t copy pages anymore. It will only let me add pages.

I’m wondering why the developers have made WP so much less flexible ….

  • Unknown's avatar

BTW, thank you *VERY MUCH* for looking into this!

  • Unknown's avatar

Can you let me know which word processor you’re copying from? Also, have you made any changes to your setup since you last successfully copied content over a few months back. For example, have you switched browsers, installed any browser extensions etc.

Forgive me for all of the questions. This is a tricky issue to get to the bottom of and I want to make sure I don’t miss anything.

While we continue to investigate this, you can format your posts under the HTML/Text view of your editor. To do this, you’ll need to add the following HTML before the text you wish to format:

    <span style="font-family: Book Antiqua, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">

And the following HTML after the text you wish to format:

    </span></span>

Thanks again for all your help in answering my questions as we troubleshoot this!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure. I’m using Office Writer. No changes to the setup.

Thank you for the add ons. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you for the add-ons.

If you can figure out how to get “copy a page” to work, I’d appreciate it. :)

If you can figure out how to get “copy a page” to work, I’d appreciate it. :)

The Copy a Post functionality only works with posts, not pages, and can be accessed in WP Admin.

It can be found within the Writer Helper module on the editing page for a post. For example, if you create a new one here:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

If you can’t see Writer Helper module on that page, then click the Screen Options tab at the top and make sure that Writer Helper is checked in there. The module will only appear when that option is checked.

We have some extra details on how to use Copy a Post here also:

    Hi there.

After looking further into the issue where you’re formatting isn’t being copied over from Office Writer, could you please confirm that the following software is what you’re referring to:

    http://www.officewriter.com/

If so, is it possible for you to try copying and pasting your formatted text from another processor, such as Microsoft Word, to see if the formatting is retained in that case?

Additionally, it does seem that the formatting has only been lost since you’ve started using the new editor. Could you try to see if the problem’s also reproducible in the classic editor? You can find it here:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php

It’s possible that this could be caused by changes to the browser you’re using, such as browser extensions you may have enabled. Could you try and see if the formatting is retained while copying and pasting from Google Chrome?

Sorry about the delay in looking into this also! As mentioned earlier, you’re still able to format your text by wrapping following HTML

    <span style="font-family: Book Antiqua, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">

And the following HTML after the text you wish to format:

    </span></span>

If you let me know the answers to my above questions, I’ll see if I can further pinpoint this issue.

Good morning. Yes, I use Officewriter and no, I don’t have another word processor other than Notepad.

I did use the HTML before and after to no avail. Here’s a link to what it looks like. https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/?page_id=9567&preview=true

Remember, this is a page, not a post.

I can’t seem to get to the classic page posting. I’ll try again. I don’t have Google Chrome yet, so getting that is next.

    Thank you!

Hi @greyhoundarticlesonline: Sorry, I forgot to mention that you’ll need to switch to your editor’s Text/HTML mode in order to add the HTML I provided. It won’t work correctly after adding it under the Visual mode. We have a guide on switching away from Visual here:

    Types of WordPress Editors

The following link will take you to the classic editor for creating a page:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=page

In general, you can access any part of WP Admin via the left-hand sidebar of this link:

    https://greytarticles.wordpress.com/wp-admin

If you can let me know if you’re able to get the formatting right with the classic editor or by using Google Chrome, that would be a big help. Thank you! :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Holy Greyhound! It works just fine in Chrome. No need to add the HTML codes either.

My deepest thanks for your suggestions!

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m so glad to hear that! :)

It does seem that it was something in Firefox that was causing the formatting to be removed in that case. Perhaps a browser extension that you’d enabled during the last few months or changes in changes rolled out to the browser in recent updates.
