Can't use password generated in WP to log into Gravatar
-
When I “generate new password” for any user, that password won’t work to log into Gravatar. I’ve chatted with several WordPress support team members and no one can give me a reason why. The only way that logging into Gravatar works is if I send a new user an email via WordPress when I create their account, have them set their own credentials, and then they log into Gravatar on their own.
For context, the blog functions like an online magazine — contributors send me their articles, bios, photos, and I publish them. I don’t want contributors to have to log into WordPress or Gravatar, but right now it seems like this is the only way to change their profile picture.
I can change my profile picture of course, but I want to reiterate that the end goal is to change contributors’ profile pictures without them having to create WordPress credentials, log into Gravatar, and update the picture themselves.
Thanks!

I will try again, but I’ve asked this two or three times already on support and have spent hours with them trying to get an answer. I was hoping the forum would be able to help.

Hi there,
I’m fairly certain I know what’s going on here :) If you have the option to reset a user’s password this means you’re using the user roles build into your WordPress site itself and not the ones that are part of the WordPress.com Business Plan and Jetpack.
We recommend that all users on your site connect through a WordPress.com account and not be added separately from the user’s interface. Adding users seperately will prevent them from logging into the site since a WordPress.com account is required for login.
Gravatar.com is a service by us here at Automattic and a WordPress.com account is required to set an image. The WordPress.com username is separate from that of the users you are adding. Since the two usernames aren’t corrected the passwords you are generating won’t work for Gravatar.com. If you have each user create a WordPress.com account they can set their Avatar at WordPress.com/me.
If you don’t want to use Gravatar but instead want a local way to manage author images you could use a plugin such as WP User Avatar for your self-hosted WordPress site.
Alternatively, you may want to check out Co-Authors Plus which allows you to create guest authors.
Note that while we do try to help out with Gravatar where we can we don’t provide support for these plugins in the forums.
