Caption
-
Hi there,
I added a caption to my feature photo for one of my posts and it isn’t showing up when I click ‘publish.’ So I tried adding a photo in the post itself and that did allow me to add a caption, however placing my photo within the post itself rather than setting it as a feature ended up removing the thumbnail display photo that I have in the footer next to my other articles. Obviously I want people to want to click on my other articles they see listed at the bottom of the page and one of the ways to draw them there is with the feature photo – however again, if I only use a feature photo I end up losing my caption. Is there a way to add a caption myself since the inbuilt option isn’t displaying mine? Please let me know! Thank you. -
Hi @valeriewittman, currently featured images don’t have built-in captions on most themes, but I’ll note your request. For now, I’d recommend adding the image again later in the post, with a caption, or (for a shorter post) adding some comments about the photo may work.

Hi there,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Do you know if there’s a way to add a caption myself? I didn’t see that option listed with the block but surely there’s a way to do it!
Also, my other issue is my thumbnail “About Me” photo that allows uploads way blurrier than the original. I tried uploading a variety of photos all different sizes and qualities, some of my own and some directly from the web and they all did the same thing. Do you know why this is happening and is there a way to fix it?

Due to the way featured images are used in site the site design (depending on your theme) there is not a way to add a caption to this block specifically. For example, some themes will use the featured image as the “header” for that page… and most site headers do not have a space to display a caption.
What most site owners will do if they want to caption the image is to
- Use image editing software to add the text directly to the image (similar to a watermark)
- Add a “Photo Credit” line to the text area of the post itself.
Regarding that second option, you may in fact see this from time to time on news sites, where at the bottom of the article they will say something like “Featured Image Credit: @metropolisphotos” in smaller text.

The About page layout you have there now is automated, so there is not a way to specify image size/quality. By default, this page displays your Gravatar profile until you edit it to add your own text here: https://wordpress.com/block-editor/page/valeriewittman.wordpress.com/1
Instead of the auto-generated Gravatar profile, you may want to create your own about page manually. Here is an example about how I would approach that. Video at this link: https://d.pr/v/jX4MIu
Hope this helps!
