Caption Confusion

I am looking for an answer as to why a caption might or might not appear for an image in the Carousel. I have a draft page at the following URL that shows the issue:

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Unfortunately only people logged into the WordPress dashboard are able to view the draft page, but I can try to help anyway.

Captions are often generated from within the media library. If you view the images that aren’t showing a caption in the media library, is there a caption created in the right hand column? If not, try adding one and see if that fixes the issue.

If that’s not the issue, it might have something to do with the carousel itself. Is the carousel part of your theme or an additional plugin? And what is the name of that theme or plugin?

    Thanks.

All the images in the Media Gallery have captions in the Captions field; all have Alt Text in that field. All of the images I used in the Gallery had those Captions and Alt Text prior to me loading them into the Gallery block. Yet, as described only one of the images is showing a Caption in the Carousel.

I have no plug-ins as far as I know. I do not have a paid WordPress plan so I couldn’t use any if I wanted to, as I understand things. The settings for the Carousel are found under my blog/Settings/Media and there is nothing regarding Captions there.

I have just made the Gallery page in question public via a password which is CaptionTest. (I don’t want the page available to the general public but have no objection if people here see it.) So, with my OP in mind please feel free to find the page here:

  • Hi @russgreene this is a known issue that has been reported to our developers. You can see that here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/captions-missing-from-galleries/

For the time being, the Gallery Block is not able to correctly “see” the caption info you have added, so with that in mind there are two options you can consider as a workaround:

    1. use newer Gallery block, but change image title
Image titles do show in the new gallery block lightbox, even though captions don’t. Since the image title will only show in the lightbox, it’s a nice way to add a “caption” that only shows in the lighbox. Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/tIG5TM

    2. Use the “Classic Block” and add a gallery inside that block
You can do this just for galleries (but use standard blocks for everything else) and you can see that because the classic block uses the old method for creating galleries, you see captions in the carousel as in the past. Example here: https://d.pr/v/qHW1wC

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I do not wish to change the image names into captions because then I won’t know what images they are–the names are integral to my image filing system.

As to inserting a gallery inside a Classic block. I have been unable to figure out how that is done. Every time I try it puts a gallery on the page in its own block, outside of the Classic block…from what I can tell.

The video you provided didn’t help me in any way. I didn’t understand what I was looking at.

  • Hi again,

That video only showed that the caption is shown in the “Classic gallery” which was already set up.

I think you may find this more helpful, as it shows how to set up a gallery while staying within the classic block: https://d.pr/v/ScviT4

    Hope this helps!
