Captions in slideshow are obscured by the pictures

  • Unknown's avatar

I am working in the Edin theme by Automattic. When I load a slideshow in a blog post, the captions do not appear beneath the pictures. Instead, they fit over the pictures and are largely obscured, making both photographs and captions messy.

My photos are all taken with an iPhone4S. Before I upload them, I reduce the size to vertical 650 pixels by x pixels horizontally, so all are 650 pixels high and sometimes vary in width.

Also, it does not seem to matter which size I pick, the photographs remain medium-sized. I would like them to be large, but picking large, thumbnail, medium or full-size makes no change in the published pic size.

You can see an example on this blog post: http://thesourdoughjournals.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/the-helen-dickey-method-with-rye-and-whole-wheat-flours/

It does look like there’s some funkiness going on with the captions here. I think this is a theme-related issue. I’m passing this along to our theme developers to review.

It looks like changing the image size is having an effect. However, the images are limited in width because of the content column (how wide your blog area is). Your content area is 540px wide. So, images within the gallery won’t exceed that size. The height is then reduced to make sure the image looks alright (growing the height and not the width would create distortion). Does that make sense?

Thank you for responding to my questions, Jeremey. I appreciate that you are bumping this caption issue to the developers.

How does that work? Will they get back to me here when they’ve had a chance to look at it?

Thank you, too, for looking at the image sizes. Most of my images are 487 pixels wide, but those I took in landscape mode far exceed the 540px post width. I will remove those and see whether it makes any difference.

Thanks again. I am most grateful for your time and expertise.

Not a problem Kathryn! Happy to help here.

I’ll be communicating with them and passing along any new information to you in this thread. You should receive an email update any time I post here so you can know if anything new happens!

Great! Just to rephrase, images that are larger than the content width of 540px will be resized to fit within the content column. Images that are smaller than 540px in width shouldn’t be changed at all. If you have any additional questions, please let me know!

Hi @graceonline – Sorry for the delay here! The caption issue should be resolved now. Let me know if you experience any additional trouble.

Thank you, once again for your time, Jeremey.

The captions are legible now, but they split the bottom ten or so pixels of the image away from the rest of the photograph.

You can see how it works in the slide show on the page I linked to earlier. I’ll link it again here:
    http://thesourdoughjournals.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/the-helen-dickey-method-with-rye-and-whole-wheat-flours/

    Any suggestions?

Thanks no good! I’ll report this one as well, and we’ll get it fixed up.

Thank you so much! Once again, I appreciate your time.

  • Unknown's avatar

No problem at all! This should be fixed up now as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

That seems to have taken care of it. Thank you! I hate to be a bother, but now there’s a new wrinkle to this problem, this time with captions that are more than one line in length.

If a caption has two or more lines, the slide-show buttons cover part of the top line.

Is that something that can be adjusted as well?

    Hi Kathryn,

Jeremey is out for a couple of days, so I’m taking a look at all of the irons that he has in the fire. I don’t suppose you have an example which I could take a look at so I could see exactly what you’re talking about with the two lines of caption problem? I looked at your previous example and the couple of photos with two lines of caption didn’t seem to be doing it there.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Mighty,

Thanks for pitching in. When I look at the link above, which I will add here to make it easy, the first line of two-line captions in the slide show is still covered up by the slide show control buttons.

    Here’s the link:

    http://thesourdoughjournals.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/the-helen-dickey-method-with-rye-and-whole-wheat-flours/

I also had that problem today with a slide show on my latest post at http://thesourdoughjournals.com/2015/02/03/whole-wheat-sourdough-walnut-raisin-bread-recipe/.

I’m using Firefox 35.0.1, which is the most recent version, if that helps.

Thanks again for getting back to me on this. I plan to use the slide show fairly often in this blog, and hope the problem can be fixed.

    Hiya Kathryn,

Thanks for the additional links! I see what you’re talking about. I have put this in front of our developers who will take a look. This one may not be as high of a priority since the buttons don’t fully block any text, it’s just really annoying . . . but I will definitely see what I can do!

I’ll let you know as soon as I have any additional information.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you, Mr. Mighty. ; )

I understand you all have a lot on your respective plates. I’ll be patient.

The buttons do block text completely if I make a three-line caption, but I try not to do that too often.

    Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

I did some investigation, and it appears that the slideshow itself doesn’t handle long (more than three lines) captions well. Edin improves on those styles a bit, but that means captions run under the buttons rather than outside of the slideshow frame entirely.

In short, the slideshow won’t work well with long captions. It may be easier to use a traditional gallery if your image captions tend to run long.

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Caroline

Thank you, sixhours. It does help to know that. Short captions are better, of course. I just need to get better at writing short!
