Captions missing from galleries
-
I’ve been creating galleries in blog posts for years with no problem–using the old editor. I just tried using the new editor (as it has some advantages), but the captions are not appearing as they should in the draft, preview, or “visit site” preview. Each gallery block is a tiled mosaic linked to media. So when clicked on the gallery should appear as a horizontally scrollable set of images with a black background and the captions beneath. The captions are not there. It is infuriating. Help!

This is the link to the draft post. The first gallery (11 photos) should have captions. I’ve given up struggling with it and recreated the post using the old editor. It works just fine there.

Hi there,
What you describe is a known issue.
The problem here is that the block editor handles image metadata, like captions, differently than the classic editor does. And the way the block editor handles it, makes it difficult for plugins like Jetpack (which is built into WordPress.com and is what powers the carousel feature) to access and use that metadata.
The team who makes Jetpack has been working on this, but until they’re able to fix it from their end, or the WordPress.org community changes the way the editor itself works in this regard, there’s no way to have the captions appear in the carousel for gallery blocks.
It should work if you use the classic block inside the block editor to create your galleries instead, though, or else if you use the gallery shortcode in a shortcode block:

I tried both methods you mentioned and they worked. However, it then begs the question of why I should bother with the blocks editor at all, given that I don’t need or use its fancier features. Overall, the classic editor works better for me. But it’s good to know how to work around the problem should I create a post using the block editor.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out on my own. Thanks for assuring me that it’s the application, not me.
A couple of interesting differences between identical versions of the posts created in the two different editors:
The format of the single inserted photo differs slightly. In the classic editor, there is a blue background behind both photo and caption, and the caption text is slightly larger.
And in the two tiled mosaic galleries where the block editor created a row of three horizontal photos, the classic editor wouldn’t allow it (even though it allowed me to select a three-column format). Instead, the classic editor rearranged them so the first two photos were in one row and the third photo dropped down below them. The rest of the gallery layouts (I was relieved to see) remained the same. I take great care in arranging these galleries, so that’s important to me.
Again, thanks.

Thanks David. They are working on a fix for the captions. Other differences may be minor or somewhat more noticeable depending on your theme, but our teams will continue to work on those issues.
In the meantime feel free to use whichever editor suits you best, and if you run into a bug with the block editor, let us know so we can make sure it’s filed.
