Captions on images
-
Hi there, I am having an ongoing issue with captioning photos. Say for example I post 10 photos and add a caption to photo number 9 and press update, the recently captioned image goes to the top of the page, thus rendering my images out of order. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Hello!
Can you give me more information on your process to add the captions? I recommend reading through this support document on how to add captions to images already in your media library and on images already in your posts:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/Let me know what step is giving you trouble and I’ll be happy to take a closer look.

Hi Csonnek, thanks for your prompt response. I am following the steps in the link that you’ve provided to add the captions, so getting the captions themselves in there isn’t the issue.
I often post a lot of photos and don’t want to caption them all. So what happens is, i upload them into the post, publish the post and then later on i will go in to edit and add captions, but i need to stress that i don’t add them to all the photos. So any photo that is captioned will immediately jump to the top of the others, thus rendering them out of order. So perhaps i don’t want to caption photo 1 or photo 2, but i want to caption photo 3. Photo 3 will them jump in front of photo 1.
This is a really convoluted thing to explain but hopefully i’ve managed to do it! Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Michelle. -

I tested posting a bunch of photos by inserting them individually using the “add media” button, publishing the post, then editing that post and adding a caption to one photo in the middle of the list and I was not able to replicate your error.
Is there an existing post on your site now that this happened so I can look to see if there’s any strange formatting issues that would cause this problem for you?
Thanks for your patience while we sort this out.

Hi csonnek, i am not inserting them individually but rather as a group by pressing Ctrl and then selecting them from either the image library or uploading them from my computer. I have taken a photograph of what i’ve just described and it can be viewed here –
http://smg.photobucket.com/user/gilchrist1/media/IMG_1670_zps2bb72aaf.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0There is a post up at the moment called Test Post for Staff. If you go into edit, then add a caption to the third photo, you will see how it jumps in front of the first photo rather than staying in its position.
Thanks,

Ok, thank you for setting that up!
The problem you’re having is highlighted when you look at the source code (aka Text Editor) of your post:
Source code screenshotAs you can see, all of your photos are being shown prior to the first paragraph tag and they’re all on the same line, code wise. After I went in and captioned the third photo, the source code was updated with a second paragraph tag, which is why it jumps to the top of you page as highlighted here:
Second screenshotThe best way to fix this is to add a paragraph tag between each image when you set it up. You can do this just by placing your cursor at the end of each photo and hit return/enter to add that paragraph tag onto each image as shown:
Add Paragraph screenshotThen when I added a caption to the third photo and saved it, it remained in the third position. I saved the post after I made those changes (and made it a draft post instead of it being published) so you can see what I did and use that information for your future posts.
I know that was a lot of information, so let me know if you have any questions.

Hi csonnek and thanks for this further info (and for sticking with me on this!) That’s great information but it only seems to work if you are uploading shots individually. Is there any way of applying this to a bulk upload where i have selected a number of images in a group?
-
I just tested it using a bulk upload, and those steps in uploading a bulk group of images will work too.
I hope that helps!

Thank you so much csonnek, this issue has had me tearing my hair out for quite a while, and i really, really appreciate your help!
Thanks again :)
