Carousel
-
I have almost 1000 posts on my blog, most of them with large photos of art objects. This has been the principal attraction of my blog. Since the introduction of the carousel my readers can no longer access the large photos and my readership is down 80%. Do I have to leave?

Clicking “Permalink” in the Carousel view takes you to wherever the thumbnail used to (either the full image file or attachment page with comments).
We’ve registered your suggestion and will keep it in mind for future features and updates! Also, don’t forget the ideas forum, where you can discuss your suggestion with the WordPress.com community.
There are no restrictions if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested.

“Clicking “Permalink” in the Carousel view takes you to wherever the thumbnail used to (either the full image file or attachment page with comments).”
1) Actually, no, it does not work for me either in Firefox or IE. Any idea why?
2) At any rate, what can possibly be the purpose of the carousel?

I didn’t understand this reply. Are you saying that if I self hosted, I could get rid of the carousel function?

The permalink button works for me in both Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox. Can you let me know what versions of those two browser’s you’re using?
The carousel offers an easier way for visitors to click through your galleries. Instead of having to go back and forth between pages or clicking on the “Next” button, you can simply move forward or backward within the carousel view by using your keyboard. That said, not everyone may think it’s an improvement — it depends on your preference.
Regarding your last question, yes, moving to a self-hosted version of WordPress means you won’t need to use the carousel view.
I hope this helps to clarify!

I am using Firefox 9.0.1 and IE 9.08112
Specifically, please look at this post:
http://humidfruit.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/some-sevres-pieces-at-the-wallace-london/what the carousel shows me is an enlarged version of whatever the size of the photo appears in the post; therefore, if the picture appears in the gallery in the post, and the gallery only shows only a small thumbnail, then the carousel will show me an enlarged picture of that thumbnail — a blurry “large” version of a tiny photo — and clicking on “permanent link” shows me the same thing.
i agree the carousel would be great if it showed something viewable or linked to it reliably, in my case it does not seem to
i will try to post a screen capture of what i get

Here is an image which is part of that post (1460 × 960):
http://humidfruit.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/s10.jpgAnd this is how it appears on my computer in the carousel:
http://humidfruit.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/humidfruit-wordpress-com-2012-01-18-08h-26m-06s.pngClicking on “permalink” does NOT take me to this address
My traffic is down from 300 hits a day to 30 because — I think — readers can’t access my photos
Help!

I’m not seeing that problem myself. For that image, the “permalink” link will take you to http://humidfruit.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/some-sevres-pieces-at-the-wallace-london/s10/
Neither that image, nor its representation in Carousel are blurry to me. This is what I see in the Carousel view: http://cl.ly/0O2n2H3I302l0y3W3i3k
As for your hits, you only had one day with 354 hits due to a very popular post. What you have since then is a very average view rate of about 100 per day.
Do you see the blurry image in both browsers? If so, can you please check from another computer?

i am encouraged that the carousel seems to be working for you. i have tried other computers from other locations (various internet cafes in town) and the results are as i describe them. Could this be because… I am in Thailand?? (Seriously, this is very weird).
(Traffic is down about 60% since about mid December when I first noticed problems with carousel).
-
OK, I have found at least one computer in Thailand which displays carousel like it is supposed to (and as you say it does for you). So the problem is not country-specific. Any guesses as to likely suspects? Some kind of antivirus software common in these parts and now where you are? I’m using kaspersky.
-
> I’m using kaspersky.
Can you try disabling it just for a quick test?
Don’t forget to enable back afterwards :) -
Nope.
It seems SOME people all over the world have a problem with my carousel. The problem isn’t country or system or browser or antivirus specific but it is common — I understand that as many 1 in 3 have a problem.
A new post (http://humidfruit.wordpress.com/2012/01/23/les-tres-riches-heures-du-duc-de-berry/) appears not to activate the carousel for some of us, but others can link directly to large images. But the post I reported initially continues to malfunction:
http://humidfruit.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/some-sevres-pieces-at-the-wallace-london/Is there anyway we can disable the carousel function on my blog?
-
Incidentally, trying to repost the original post from scratch, I got this:
http://humidfruit.wordpress.com/2012/01/23/4079/
how does this look to you? On my computer, the carousel does not work as advertised and the top image (inserted in the post) appears tiny.
