When posting on a blog and forgetting to pick a category or two to post in, WordPress sometimes creates a new category instead of posting in the standard category. The new category is always called “1”.
How do I avoid this?

That happens when you have deleted the original default category without setting another one in its place. Go to Settings>Writing, select a category you use often as your “Default Post Category”, click Save Changes.
