Categories

Categories are now gone, replaced only with “most used.” It offers an “all catergories” link but there’s no response when you click it.

Why the hell did WordPress give us this abortion? Very little works in IE and even less in Firefox. I still cannot upload any JPEGs, only YouTube videos, and all of my browser material is up to date and working.

If I could move this blog back to Blogger without losing everything, I’d do it. And Blogger is terrible.

  • Unknown's avatar

Look below the editor text area, it is now down there.

  • Unknown's avatar

No it isn’t. All that’s there is a feature that says “Most Used Categories.” It no longer shows all the categories nor will it allow me to add new ones.

  • Unknown's avatar

There’s a little thing to click next to “All Categories” but all it does is go around in a circle. Nothing more. It arbitrarily is limiting me to the categories used most. Screw this. Why did you guys monkey around with something that wasn’t broken and not give us the chance to go back to the old format????

  • Unknown's avatar

Really? That’s odd. Because mine has a “All categories” right below the “Most Used” tab. And you can most certainly “add a new category”.

  • Unknown's avatar

Mine is in the same location but it does absolutely nothing when you click it.

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t even post to my own blog because I don’t have my categories. Thanks for nothing, WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

Nothing works in either Firefox or IE. Plus, I still cannot add photos. Why did you guys screw around with something that was working just fine? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Now I only have eight categories to choose from, which don’t fit my posts on my own blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

Maybe you should “add a new category” even if that category already exists (somewhere).

i am so aggravated! i actually like having the most used categories show up, as i can click on them instead of searching through all the categories looking for them. however, when i click on “all categories”, they all show up, and i click on the ones i want. then i save (a dozen times or so just to make sure), and when i preview, all that shows up are the categories that are used most often and the tags. i have to keep redoing the same categories over and over again until they finally stay there. it is ridiculous and an absolute waste of time.
the categories were perfectly placed and worked very well in the old version. i don’t know what the programmers thought was being enhanced by this new version.

If you’re just blowing off steam that’s fine, we don’t need any information.

If you want us to help solve the problem we need:
    Your browser and version.
Whether you’ve performed the Cookie Dance (sign out, delete browser cache and cookies, do a forced reload of the page)
A direct link to your blog and, if one post is in question, a link to that post
A list of the categories we SHOULD be seeing

I’ve run into the same error and managed to resolve it. But we can’t resolve it for other people without that information.

sorry, raincoaster. i thought that clicking on my name led directly to my blog, but it seems that that is no longer the case. is there a way to restore that link? here is my blog:
    http://mikk2.wordpress.com/
the problem with the categories has occurred with the last 2 postings as well as the one that i have ready to post now. i have 736 categories, and i don’t supposed you want me to list them all.
i always liked wordpress, because it is very user friendly, and i am technically challenged. i honestly don’t know what version of wordpress i use, and i honestly don’t understand the cookie dance at all. i apologize for my lack of smarts.
i really do appreciate wordpress, and i feel guilty moaning and groaning about the new version. i just think that the old placement of categories (as well as the wider writing window) were so much better than the present version.
thanks for any help you can give me. it really is appreciated.

To have your name be a link to your blog it has to be under Website on your Profile page. If that’s not working, we’ve had a report of nicknames set on that page not working either in the forums, and you’ll need to contact staff and tell them. Weird bug.

Just tell me what categories should be on the last post, ie the ones you want to show up and, presumably, ticked on the long list. Tell me also the ones you see showing up, ie the shorter list you’re reporting. It could well be that we see two different things. I will check and report back to this thread.

It’s a pleasure to meet someone who uses even more categories than I do (yay, no more guilt) and I agree about the placement. The little window now is too narrow and doesn’t display enough categories, meaning a LOT of scrolling. And just in the past couple of days it seems they’ve switched it so that Most Used is the default; we should have a choice of setting that ourselves.

    raincoaster,
i just updated my profile again, so i will see if the link works when i post this comment.
i publish at 8:00. at that time, i will see if the categories miraculously work at that time. if not, i will compile the list and post them here for you. yesterday, the categories (other than the most used) did not show up when i posted, but did show up when i edited and added them.
i am glad that i could remove some of your guilt. i am a packrat when it comes to categories. it started out so innocently. i didn’t know about adding tags, so i kept adding category after category, even when i knew i would probably not use them more than once or twice. now i am too lazy to remove them and just make tags for those entries.
i agree that it should be a choice whether to use ‘most used’ or all. my carpal tunnel syndrome is getting much worse with all the scrolling now necessary to add tags and write a diary.

    okie dokie,
my name now links to my blog. thanks, raincoaster!
i just published the diary, and, sure enough, only these categories posted:

Chimpy, George W. Bush, Republicans, WordPress Political Blogs, humor, movies, parody, politics, snark

i had to edit the diary in order for these categories to show up:

Harriet Miers, Josh Bolten, executive privilege, Gonzogate, Michael Mukasey,
House Judiciary Committee, Justice Department, Congress, Karl Rove, White House scandals, Nancy Pelosi

i had added them twice before and saved them several times before, but they didn’t show up.

have to run to the store, but will check back here when i get back.
thanks again, raincoaster. i greatly appreciate the help!

I see them all. But yesterday I published a post and when I looked at it later more than half the categories were missing. I KNOW that it initially published with all the categories because there’s a blog that subscribes to one of those categories and displays blogs using it in its sidebar: that link showed up on Technorati, so obviously that category was on the post when it went live. I did not edit it, but later that category was missing.

Keep an eye on that post and see if those categories go missing in the future.

Yo, fashionista..or foot fetishist. Thank you for joining 15 minutes ago to spam the forum.

  • Unknown's avatar

    raincoaster,
it’s not a matter of them disappearing later on. the problem is that i click on all the categories that i want when i write the diary. then i save it. when i go back, they are all gone, except for the most frequently used ones. when i posted this latest diary, once again, all the categories were missing except the frequently used ones. i had to publish the diary, edit and add all the ones except the frequently used ones and then save it again. only then do they show up. i haven’t had a problem with them disappearing later on.

  • Unknown's avatar

What I’m saying is that, judging from what I saw on my blog, they might appear for just enough time for search engines, etc, to pick them up. Check your RSS feed and see if they’re there.

  • Unknown's avatar

i just did a test diary. i clicked on all of the frequently used categories. then i clicked on ‘all categories’ and added dick cheney. when i previewed, it looked fine, and cheney was still there along with all the frequently used categories. when i published, cheney was gone. he didn’t show up on the rss feeds either. it was as though i had never added the category.
