Categories

My categories are not all appearing at the top of my blog? I write a travel blog and have my primary categories broken down by continent. For some reason Asia, Africa, and Europe do not show in the list of main categories that appear at the top of the blog even though I have written blogs that include those categories. Europe was there for a while but disappeared today. Even when it did show up, the subcategories did not drop down when I scrolled over the name. I have not touched the category list and when I review the section in my dashboard they all look like they are set up correctly.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

The Traveler theme will display your 12 most popular categories (the one’s with the most posts) in the Category menu shown here:

Currently, between the main menu items and the drop-down items, I’m seeing 12 total items (including “All”).

If you posted three or four more posts to “Africa” for example, that would be shown in the menu as it would be one of your 12 top categories. Does that help to clarify?

That would mean that the theme is including the sub-categories or the siblings of the parent categories in the top 12. Is there any way to change that setting so that only the parent categories are included in the top 12. That way I could include all my main categories and show a more complete picture of the posts I’ve included. Otherwise, I would have to go into my categories and remove the specific countries that are currently listed under the parent categories.

There isn’t a way to do this baked into the theme by default. However, I’m going to reach out to our theme developers to see if this would be a possibility in the future. As of right now, the main solution if you want to continue using that menu area would be to remove the child categories.

If you’re open to using the top menu (shown here), you could set a custom menu and include your categories as explained here:

    Menus

That way, you would be able to add unlimited categories and sub-menus.

Thanks. I got rid of the child categories for areas I don’t need to highlight at this point. It works for now but if you could talk to the developers about tweaking the code I think that would help provide some flexibility in how the information is presented going forward.
