  I am trying to restructure my two blogs. when i put up new post, i cannot find categories on righthand side box (even tho i have already created categories). also for one, widget for categories only allows footers not sidebar (leadership blog). all advice welcome!

  Ah -right!

  i cannot find categories on righthand side box (even tho i have already created categories)

  This is because the theme currently active is “Maywood” and supports no sidebar:
  https://wordpress.com/theme/maywood

  Have you considered using a different theme?
  Have a look here for alternatives, that suit your propose better:

  Hi! Thanks for this – it is really helpful as specifying the cause of the problem. I have tryed a few themes (Redhill esp) but still same issue, it seems.

  I wonder could you list a few themes with widgets that allow for new posts to be allocated to categories and have such categories showing in a sidebar. Much thanks.

  I believe you’d be better served by the theme “Twenty Twenty” though, judging from what you are trying to achieve -and keeping things neat at the same time:

  It certainly does – thanks very much.

  I used “Independant Publishing 2” from your very helpful list (I’ll go back to try TwentyTwenty later) and it generated the sidebar which is progress

  However,
  * the sidebar only includes “uncategorised” and
  * I am still not able to generate a New Post and allocate to a category
  * the Righthand box shows tags but not categories (I have generated a list of categories already)

  I feel I have missed one step that would let such categories be shown in the sidebar and a new post allocated to them?

  found answer! I just needed to press settings at top and the righthand box appears with categories etc.
