Isn’t there a list of main categories somewhere? I can’t seem to find one. It seems silly to start a category called pets when there probably is one already.
I would like a list of main headings and can go from there.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s not they way things work. Everyone of us creates our own Categories in our dashboard http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-your-dashboard and then we assign them to our posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-with-the-categories-module We can also assign Tags to our posts instead or as well as Categories. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/
The Global Tag Listings at WordPress.com aggregate all published posts attached to any particular tag or category, and display our most popular topics. To locate blogs in Categories and or Tags of interest to you see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/
