categories and category pages

    I added two category pages to my menu with thecustomizer. Then, from the dashboard, I created a few posts, choosing one of the two categories. But when I click on the category page, all the posts show in the first category. If I use the category select field in the side bar, I can get to the 2nd category. But when I click on the category page menu item, it only goes to the first category. How do I connect the category selected on the dashboard to the category page?
