categories and posting

I am trying to post by category and it is NOT WORKING! I have created custom menu, categories and check the appropriate category and I have yet to get a new post to go to the category selected… ugh!!! I have followed to a T these directions from this site: http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/ and I have undone and redone the work to see if I did it wrong…, it is not working.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is only ONE post in your blog’s entire feed (http://nopencilrequired.wordpress.com/feed/) and that one post hasn’t been assigned to a category – it’s shown as “Uncategorized” (http://nopencilrequired.wordpress.com/2014/07/06/welcome-2/). There won’t be any posts showing up in your category pages if you haven’t published any posts and assigned them to the right categories.
I see only the following category pages: http://nopencilrequired.wordpress.com/category/indy-blog/

http://nopencilrequired.wordpress.com/category/shape-blog/To have a post appear in any of those pages you have to create a new post (Post ->Add New in the Dashboard) and assign the post to that category by checking the relevant box in the Categories module. If you cannot see the categories module, click on Screen Options at the top of the page and make sure it’s selected. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-categories-module

Thank you for your time in reply. I had several test posts but since deleted. I was able to go back in to appearance – menu – remove categories and pages and make new. This time through the entire process the label “uncategorized” came off my former pages and allowed me to re-label them and am now successful at making specific posts to specific pages. i.e. I can now have a content specific dialogue within my classes with my students. Yeah!
