Categories and Subcategories

  • Unknown's avatar

At present I have a number of top level categories, but no subcategories. I think that this would be better structured if I could convert all of my existing categories into subcategories, then create a few new top level categories, and reassign my new subcategories (old categories) to appropriate ones of these. Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello @rodwargaming
    Yes it is possible.

You can create new categories either from the post editor screen or via your WP-ADMIN dashboard. But you can only edit existing categories from the WP-ADMIN dashboard.

    So follow these steps:
    1. Go to your WP-ADMIN dashboard by clicking this link: http://rodwargaming.wordpress.com/wp-admin
    2. Not go to Posts → Categories or just click here: http://rodwargaming.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
    3. Now, to a add new category under an existing category use the Add New Category section and from the “Parent” dropdown menu select the parent category.
    And,
To add existing categories to a top-level category, hover over the category and click on Edit. On the Edit screen, from the “Parent” dropdown menu select the parent category. And click UPDATE.

    Hope this helps 🙂

    @Rodwargaming:

As I look at your site, it appears to be made up of pages, using a page hierarchy as described in this support topic:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-options/

The section otpidusprime referenced is an organization system for Posts. The post URL includes a date but what I looked at on your site seemed to be a series of pages and subpages.

And your menu seemed to have a hierarchy of pages, so perhaps you have completed your reorganization.

You might be interested in the use of shortcodes to automatically include the titles of child pages on your introductory pages.

    Fascinating site.

    otpidusprime,

Many thanks. I will do that later this week and let you know how I got on.

    houstonweaver,

My top menu currently has 37 pages, organised in a parent, child and grandchild structure, shown as drop downs from that top menu. That is fine and I add pages to them occasionally.

I also have a blog, currently containing 35 posts, and it is those that have categories which I now want to convert to sub-categories. These categories show in a side widget. Another side widget shows posts chonologically. I normally add 2-4 blogs per month. When I started this blog last year there were very few posts, but as it grew I created new categories, and now feel that they would benefit from a category and sub-category structure, which I will create following the guidance from otpidusprime.

The only other point which I would like help with is knowing whether there is an easy way of putting my post categories and subcategories into an order prescribed by me, and not an alphabetical one, which seems to be the default.

Where do you want to put your categories? By default the categories are sorted alphabetically, If you want to view them in some other order you can go to http://rodwargaming.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category and click on the column titles(eg: Slug, Description or Count etc.) to sort them respectively. But it wont affect anything else, it just changes the view of categories.

If you are trying to change the order of categories on Categories Widget, then read this: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/#category-order

Let us know if these help! 🙂

    otpidusprime,

Many thanks. I have now created some new Categories, changed most of my former Categories into Subcategories and assigned them to the new Categories.

Rather than create a whole new Categories menu, I put them in the order which I wanted by giving the Categories numbers and the Subcategories letters (very military, but I did spend 30 years in the British Army!!!)

Thank you again for making this easy for me, even at my advanced years.

But you can only edit existing categories from the WP-ADMIN dashboard.

Regarding this statement I made on my previous answer.

I found out that you can also edit categories by going to My Site(s) → Settings → Writing → Categories (https://wordpress.com/settings/taxonomies/category/)

On that screen click on the 3-dots “•••” and then click Edit to edit your categories. You can also change the top-level(parent category) here as well.

To add a new category click on ADD NEW CATEGORY button on that screen.

    Thanks! 🙂
