Categories do not show in sidebar

  Added categories to a couple of make-believe posts, added the categories widget, followed directions to make visible, tried 4 or 5 different templates–cannot get the categories to show in sidebar. Must be missing something. Just playing–not a published site–practice for working on a published site that needs help.

  OK. After more investigation and finding different directions on a different help page–it appears that despite adding the category widget to the side bar, the categories will only show up in the side bar if I first add them to the primary menu/nav bar at the top of the page. And that’s not what I want.

  Is there no way to get the categories show ONLY in the sidebar?
