categories in back end not in sync with active website

  Hi all,
  please help with the following:
  I deleted categories november 2005, december 2005, november 2006, oktober 2011
  renamed december 2006 category into: voorgaande periode
  linked all posts to the renamed category
  deleted categories show in site; renamed category does not

  ??
  old categories are not populated in posts filter selection by category; that is ok
  For the fist time in history I’m lost…

  my mistake: in the widget was placed the archives by moths widget
  where I made also catagory names with the same title
