Categories In Blog Posts

    Hi, I made many categoried when I started Blogging. Later I understood that categories are used to club similar posts together and I can choose multiple tags relevant to my articles but have to club my posts into specific categories. How do I delete the irrelevant categories now?? I have not created any child category and all my posts have relevant catgories only but on my blog, all the irrelevant categories appear under select category button. Please help
