Categories in pages and posts – search engine results
-
I have just created a new wordpress site at:
This is a website about software methodology and practices. I decided to use pages to publish this website instead of posts because the advice on WordPress is to use pages instead of posts when the information won’t be changing very often. The problem with posts it that there does not appear to be a way to specify categories and post tags.
What I am concerned about is that the site won’t get many hits because there are no categories or post tags. So, my question is – is there a way to specify categories and post tags for pages? If there is not currently a way to do this, then can you please submit this as a feature request?
I understand that html keyword tags are no longer used by major search engines. However, the description meta tag is used. Is there a way to specify a way to set this meta tag, which is specified in the header of the html page and not available to users on WordPress.com, as well as any other tags that might be looked at by search engines? I suspect the answer is no, but could you please submit a feature request that would allow users to do this if that is the case?
Finally, should I rewrite my site to use posts instead of pages. This would be quite a bit of work since I have custom navigation links on each page. But, I am willing to do it if it means getting more hits.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not being able to categorize or tag pages is one of the drawbacks as is the fact that with static sites, there is little if any change to excite the search engines. This is why virtually everyone is not including a blog on their static sites to keep the search engines interested.
If you use posts to do a virtually static site, the results are the same. The search engines find the posts, index them, and then after a while when they see no new content, the start visiting less and less, so switching to posts for a static site really won’t do a lot of good.
As far as keywords and such, the search engines will always search for, and pull keywords for their indexes out of the post or page content. In general they typically do a pretty good job of grabbing relevant words.
