categories not apearing

Hello!
I am trying to put categories on my blog but they don’t appear .I’ve putted a category widget, and the widget appears but the categories are not(i added them from article-categories by writing only the name, nothing at Category Parent or descriptin) and they appear on that pannel ,but not o the blog also.

A category won’t show up in the widget unless there’s at least one post filed under that category. (Makes sense: categories are groups of posts by topic – there’s no point in displaying a zero-posts ‘group’.)
And please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know. We usually need that to give a relevant answer.

I have exactly the same problem. I have a new blog which I have not yet made public because I’m getting used to using wordpress. I have written and posted several posts and assigned them to three different categories. The categories widget appears in the sidebar but it says ‘no categories’.

I get a “file not found” error when I go to the site linked which means there are no posts published. Categories also will not show until at least one post with that category is actually published.

Actually my blog has nine posts and their status – according to what it says in the dashboard – is ‘privately published’. If I understand you correctly, you are saying the blog has to be publicly published before the categories will appear. Is that right?
