Categories not showing in parent-child order

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m puzzled about my blog at towabletraveltrailers.wordpress.com where I have categories that are part of the parent category, but they don’t show up in order in the sidebar when I tie a post to a category. If you’ll notice, it’s not in order. Forest River is parent, with Flagstaff Classic being below that and 829FKSS below Flagstaff Classic, but they don’t show up in the sidebar in that order. They are ramdon by alpha rather than in order of parent and child. What do I need to do to fix that problem.

Dashboard -> Design -> Widgets -> edit Categories ->check “Show hierarchy” -> change -> scroll down and Save

Hi 1tess, I don’t have any widgets set up…. The theme has something I guess set up in code to show categories. I tried to use the widget for categories, but I didn’t see how it worked because you can only select one item there….

To 1tess…. I think I figured it out. Unfortunately, the search box looks like your searching just that one category… wish I had it at the top of the page with some space before you see categories…. know of a quick fix for that? You’ve been very helpful so far and I appreciate it very much.

I just experimented with your theme and it appears to be hard-coded not to allow hierarchy for categories. The only thing I can suggest is to try another theme.

OK, sorry, I actually read your blog and the problem might be different. You want 2 categories: “Forest River” and “Flagstaff Classic Super Lite.”

Eliminate the categories with the actual vehicle numbers (829BHRS, 829BHSS, 829FBRS etc.). Instead, edit those posts to use the category they belong to.

Then you might use the model numbers as tags. Use a tag cloud widget to see your tags and readers will be able to click them to see the floor plan. Note, though that there is a limited number of tags displayed in the cloud so if you have too many model numbers they won’t all show. If you don’t use the tag cloud, readers will be taken to the WordPress global tag page like this:

    This might help:

The difference between tags and categories

    – If you see no widgets in Design>Widgets, that means you haven’t added one yourself and the theme displays its own default set. Adding any widget cancels that set: you take over, and can add or edit widgets freely. You can also rearrange their order by dragging them in new positions. Don’t forget to click Save Changes.

    – In Jentri the category hierarchy will be displayed if you select the dropdown option.

I guess I’m lost…. I have the model numbers selected for just the child but it shows up in both parents as well as the child, which is not what I want. I’m going to have over 100 models shown and was going to have that many child categories, but apparently that’s not what I should do…. anyone got any other ideas to help me make this work in a hierarchy way. Didn’t know this was going to be that complicated. Thanks to everyone who has responded. Maybe someone will have a better idea for me soon on this forum so I can start over.

    – As 1tess correctly warned, the number of tags displayed is limited (to 45), so this idea won’t do in your case.

    – One way to do it is remove the categories widget and create an ARCHIVE page (Write > Page > Advanced Options > Page Template > select “Archives page”). Here’s a complete list of the themes that have this feature:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/automated-article-index-page-and-widget?replies=7#post-265335

    – Another way is to create a normal page and write a list of links to your posts in it (fast way to do it: two windows open in your browser, main blog page in the one and VISUAL page editor in the other, drag&drop post titles to editor, rearrange if/as necessary).

    – Yet another way, if you want the actual list in your sidebar: as above (without publishing the page), then copy the whole code from the HTML post editor and paste it in a text widget.

(In cases 2 and 3 you don’t even need to categorize each post under a different category.)

What I said above may have been confusing.
Your categories should be Manufacturer A,Manufacturer B,Manufacturer C…
Assign each model to the appropriate category.
If Manufacturer A has models which could be classified as, say, Large, Medium, Small,
then Manufacturer A could have the child pages “Large,” “Medium,” “Small.”

Reading a list of 100 model numbers would not be very informative.

thanks to everyone. I changed theme’s and added another category just for floorplans.

I am new to Blogs. I try to create category as per FAQ but it does not appear on page.

    @vigilanceforum:

Please give a link to your blog when asking questions, and/or link your nickname to your blog as explained in the Sticky “8 Things to Know”.

A category won’t show up in your sidebar if you don’t have any posts assigned to it.

I’m using the DePo Masthead by Derek Powazek/Noel Jackson (awesome for my purpose, BTW!). I’d rather not have “Archives” in the bottom middle column; I don’t even have “Archives” added as a widget anywhere. Possible? The Archive on the front page doesn’t display all categories. If the Archives must remain where it is, how can I get all categories to appear there? THX.

    makesyawonder,
Your question does not have anything to do with the subject of this thread. It gets confusing for searching if threads go off topic. Best to start a new thread with your question.
Also, when you write a link to your blog, make it clickable by starting with http://thecherokeechronicle.wordpress.com
or even better, link your name to your blog:
dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to ‘contact info’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes

I think the archive widget you see is part of the preset arrangement for that theme. If you add another widget there, it will go away.

@yaffel – you have the address of your blog incorrect in your user name. Is this your blog? http://yaffel.wordpress.com/ If so, I see two posts, both categorized into God Bless This Child.
