Categories, parent and children

I have a ‘Parent’ category for ‘Postcards’ and underneath that i have children categories for specific years. I also want to have children categories for places (i.e. Scotland, Wales etc.) Is this possible or would it create too many child categories, is there a limit perhaps? Also if i added different place names with ‘Postcards’ as the parent would the place names get mixed up with the years categories, which also has ‘Postcards’ as its parent, or would they all be grouped together. I hope that makes some sense to someone, as i don’t know how else to explain it all. Thanks.

There isn’t any limit that I know of, but the one thing to always thing about is keeping things as simple as possible while still giving adequate organization to the content.

You cannot have two categories with the same name, so you can’t have 2010 as a parent of postcards and also have 2010 as a separate parent of say pictures. Even though we can have parents and children and grandchildren categories, we cannot have duplicates.

You might want to think about something like Scotland 2010 as a category, or perhaps postcards 2010 or something like that. I’m just using those as examples and don’t know all of what you are trying to organize, so just use those as springboards.

OK that makes sense. I was thinking of adding, for instance, only ‘Scotland’ ‘Wales’ and ‘London’ as child categories to the Parent category ‘Postcards’. I’ll give it a try. Thanks for your help much appreciated.

You are welcome, and how you are heading sounds like it will work well.
