Categories question

I’ve read all the info under the heading of Categories but can’t find an answer to this issue. Can I set up two different sets of Categories, one dealing with post categories and the other dealing with links?? I’ve tried going into the categories section and it doesn’t seem to give me a choice of a whole other set of categories, so I’m a bit doubtful of my chances to do this. The reason I’d like to specifically have a categories list of links is so post categories and link categories could all be in drop down menus. My sidebar would look much neater.
If there is a way of doing this please be specific because my brain is mush right now. LOL Whether I can do this or not, I thank you for your time and effort in reading and answering. Many thanks!!
