categories question

    I was told a few weeks ago by a volunteer, that I could solve my problem of posting recipes to category by just posting a recipe and putting it there. So I just tried to do so, thinking I could write a post and then link to the post of the recipes, which would reside only under the appropriate category. Alas, when I just tried to do that, but I end up with a post both as a new post AND in categories. Isn’t there some way for me to write a post without the recipe in it, and then link to the recipe, which would be filed under the appropriate category?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    All posts from all categories will show on the main post page, which is typically the front page of a site. There is no way to exclude categories from the main post page.

    Thanks for clarifying that for me. I was hoping that there would be some way to simply file my recipes by themselves, but if I understand you correctly, it just can’t be done. Guess it’s time to drop back 5 and punt!

    The only thing I could think of would be:

    1. Create a static front page for your site
    2. Create a category for your normal blog posts and assign all non-recipe posts to that category
    3. Put that non-recipe category into the top navigation along with the recipe categories if you wish.

    When someone clicked on the non-recipe category in the top navigation it would show them only the posts in that category. You could then link to the recipes in your non-recipe posts.

    It’s a little cumbersome, but it is one idea.

    Thanks for your thinking on this. On second consideration, I think your first instinct was correct: It’s too cumbersome. I will just have to live with the fact that a blog is a blog is a blog, Thanks for your help. A-blogging I shall go! :}

    You are welcome.

    You can use the read more tag before the recipe so that the recipe does not show on the site main page. They would have to click the read more link in order to see the recipe.

    But it would have to go to another post, right? There is no other non-post place to do the “read more” from?

    The read more tag breaks a post so that only part of it (the part before the more tag) shows on the main page. When clicked it opens that post in the single-post view and would reveal the rest of the post.
