Categories shortcode to show "latest post" isn't updating

  Hello,

  For years our club has been updating several pages with the link to our latest event. I thought I’d be clever and insert a shortcode, so the latest event is automatically posted to these pages.

  Well, I added the shortcode and everything seemed to be working, but the next month the post didn’t change to reflect the latest event post. I went into the post and updated it, and that refreshed it. However, this somewhat defeats the point of using the shortcode.

  Is there a way I can have the post update automatically? What would you recommend? Will shortcodes work in the sidebar? …I would think not, but then if you have to put the shortcode into a post that must be edited, what’s the point of a shortcode that shows the latest post? I feel like I’m missing something here.
