Categories widget

at long last its getting there

is there a link/code to link the post and take the reader to the posts page ( if you follow that )

  • Unknown's avatar

No I don’t understand what you mean. :( Please expand.

The posts in your blog are displaying on your blog’s front page. Click the title of any post there and you will see the whole post displaying on it’s own page. That’s normal blog behavior.

You have the Pages widget installed and the links to all your pages are displaying. Once again click the title link and the page will display.

As you say in the OP you do not have the categories widget in the sidebar. When you do place it there readers can click any category and locate all posts in your blog that you have assigned to that category. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/

i’ll put the categories widget back now i have just remembered i have done what i asked i installed the page url in all the posts so if they want to they can go straight to the main page where the post is from

If that’s what you want to so then okay but do understand that IMHO every page you have created in your blog could have been a “pillar post”. If that had been the case then every time you created an new post on the same subject matter you could have backlinked to the original post.

    IMHO??? what :)

i think i understand what you say and your links and reading the comments as well your readers seem to be happy with pillar and deeplink posts

if my readers are at my posts and want more information all they have to do is click the link to the main page

is everything ok on what i have done :), or is my blog going to blow up :( , harry

“if my readers are at my posts and want more information all they have to do is click the link to the main page”

You mean you’re not actually putting INFORMATION in your posts? Just a link to where they can get information?

First off 80% of people will not click the link. They’ll just leave and think you’re lame.

Secondly, search engines will think you’re useless, and give you a low ranking.

Think of it this way: you send people to the posts, and in the posts they find…not what they were looking for, but a link to go somewhere else. This is like opening a shop which is just a big empty room and when people walk in looking for stuff you greet them and hand them a map to wear the “real stuff” is.

Adding: Harry, what the HELL are you doing? Each of your posts consists only of a link to a static page. I don’t have time to explain why this is a bad idea, but THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA.

Just write new posts with all the stuff right, you know, in the post.

all posts have been changed i think i have them right please have a quick look , thank you , harry

i followed your advice and fixed them and as timethief said they are much better

because i did not understand what i was doing :)

    Your blog won’t “blow up”.

You chose to have static Pages and to place the content that I would have placed in “pillar posts” on those static Pages. You chose to put that content where you felt it was logical and reasonable to put it ie. on static Pages.

I would have made a different choice. I would have placed that content into Posts. Static pages have very little Google juice and cannot have Categories and Tags assigned to them. Posts have lots of Google juice and we can assign Categories and Tags to them.

Other bloggers become aware of Posts via search engine results and when they publish posts on related topics they link to the most relevant and authoritative posts found in the most authoritative blogs in their niche. This is called backlinking and the number of backlinks a blog earns is one of the factors in the algorithm that determines PageRank.

Do you feel at peace with the structure you have now? Or are you concerned about it?

  • Unknown's avatar

ok , i get it , lots of posts + tags and less pages = more visitors = pagerank = happy harry

  • Unknown's avatar

no , not concerned and i’m happy just asked to question about tags and cats to try to fix the posts

    @Harry
    Here’s are two freebies.

Below is a brief list of other sites/blogs in the same niche with higher PageRanks than your blog to consider becoming a reader of /subscriber to and linking to in your Links (blogroll):

    1. About.com Home Repair (PageRank 6/10) http://homerepair.about.com/
    2. HGTV start at home decorating and home improvement (PageRank 6/10) http://www.hgtv.com/
    3. This Old House: Home improvement and remodeling (PageRank 6/10) http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/
    4. repairhome (PageRank 4/10) http://www.repair-home.com/
    5. doityourself.com (PageRank 4/10) http://www.doityourself.com/

Take note of the keywords and phrases they use in their blog titles taglines, post titles, post sub-titles, categories and tags on their articles, and on their sites in general.
    Make a list of them.
In your upcoming posts where applicable use the same keywords and keyword phrases and backlink to the most relevant and best written posts you can find in those blogs/sites and in other authoritative blogs/sites in your niche.
