Categories widget

    I’m having a problem attaching categories to my posts. I’ve worked through the tutorial on the categories widget and seem to have done everything right but my posts still keep coming up as ‘uncategorised’. I know this is probably very simple but I’m stuck and getting frustrated! Can anybody help?

    @lorrainegwinnutt

    It’s no problem!

    It seems like you’re using Tags instead of Categories:

    You can find information on the difference between the two here:

    Categories vs. Tags

    Just check off the Categories you want for each post, save the changes, and you should be good to go.

    You’re a star! Thank you so much for your help. I now seem to have endlessly repetitive categories, but now I’ve broken my duck (so to speak) I can have a go at tidying things up.

    PS: I somehow appear to be ‘following’ myself which is extremely embarrassing! You don’t know how I can delete that, do you? Here I am trying to embrace technology and tripping myself up at every turn.

    Thank you again for your help – I’m really grateful.

    @lorrainegwinnutt

    You’re awesome, Lorraine!

    I’m glad you’re getting things sorted out. There is nothing wrong with following yourself, but I’ve removed the subscription to lorrainegwinnutt.wordpress.com, as requested.

    Let us know if you have any more questions :-)

    And you’re very kind! I’ve been reminding my fella that I’m awesome all weekend (he’s getting a bit fed up with me now!).

    The reason I accidentally followed myself is because a friend of mind wanted to ‘follow’ me but said he was directed to a site which asked for money. I was, naturally, very excited about having a whole ‘follower’ and disappointed that it didn’t work out which is why I tried to investigate. So my question is – if you’re not on wordpress and want to follow someone who is, is there a cost involved or has my friend just clicked the wrong button – do you happen to know?

    I’ll try not to darken your (virtual) door again after this.

    Many thanks again for your patience!

    Hi Lorraine,

    Paul is out today and I didn’t want to leave your ticket just sitting there, so I thought I would jump in.

    If someone doesn’t have WordPress.com and they want to follow your blog, when they click on the Follow button it will prompt them to enter their email address. We send them an email asking them if they’re sure they want to do that (just to make sure people aren’t signing someone else up by accident), and then just like that they should start getting emails whenever you create a new post.

    We don’t charge for folks to subscribe, so I’m not sure where he clicked. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, we do have a paid-for version of WordPress.com so I suppose it’s possible he ended up on a page which talks about that, however I’m not sure how.

    In any case, if he wants to give it a try again I’m sure he’ll get it through!

    Thank you so much for getting back to me on this. Honestly, you’d never get customer help like this in England.

    Thank you for clearing this up – I’ll let my friend know. He would have had a virtual heart attack if he thought he was going to have to pay for something (he’s a Scotsman!).

    Anyway, many thanks again – I love your job title, by the way.

    Best wishes

    Lorraine

    Hey now! I lived in Glasgow for 3 years and I’m offende- . . .

    . . . oh who am I kidding? That’s 100% accurate. ;)

    I’m glad I was able to help! Let me know if there’s anything else you need going forward.

    Ah, but that doesn’t mean you’re Scottish!

    ……..are you?

    Nah – you can’t be. They don’t need sunglasses in Scotland.

    Thanks so much – I hope I won’t have to darken your (virtual) door too soon!

    Nope, not Scottish in the slightest. Even after those three years I couldn’t even properly fake an accent. ;)

    Don’t worry about darkening doors. If you need anything let me know!
