Categories widget removed but still publishing

A link to your blog would help.
That said, sidebars are cached serverside and can take some time to update.
Try doing a forced reload of the page and see if it looks better as sometimes the page will also be cached locally.

Do you mean here on this blog? Please remember that only you can see what is occuring. If you don’t tell us, we can only make guesses.
If that’s the blog you’re looking at, looks you’re not using any widgets in the sidebar and the theme is just using the default sidebar. Bets bet would be to use the widgets but only the ones that you want in there.

Whoops, my blog is monkeyhill.wordpress.com.
I did change it very recently so my guess is that it’s just caught up serverside.
