Categories will not delete, other times they randomly disappear

  I’m having strange things happening with Categories. More specifically, category “slugs”.

  Categories that I have intentionally deleted act as if they are still cached. For example, when I create a new category using the same name as one I previously deleted, the error message indicates the “slug is already in use” and will automatically append a number to the category slug, or if the category is a child, it appends its parent category name to the slug. (The category name is unaffected). The category slugs that are “already in use” are not displaying on the categories page (in wp-admin). But if I “View All” of the available categories under Menus, I can see the “deleted” categories listed.

  I have tried the following:

  Eliminated duplicate slugs in other taxonomies… pages, posts, tags, media.
  Deleted any menus that contained deleted categories.
  Cleared the cache on my browser.

  I hope I am making sense… about to lose my mind! :-)

  Sidebar: On a couple of occasions, when creating a new category, ALL of the other categories disappeared (at least from view). Luckily, I am just getting started with this project so no major harm is done. I am unable to replicate this problem consistently.

  I am using the “Responsive” theme by Cyberchimps.

  I might add, I don’t normally pay such close attention to slugs as I create them, but I noticed this ridiculously long URL which led me back to this problem:

  Here is an example of a category page I created where I cannot see the category (Prattville) on the Category list (wp-admin), but I SEE it as available on the Edit Post and Edit Menu pages.

  Oddly enough, after a couple of hours, I decided to export the website as an xml and import to a new website. I exported, created a new website, started the import process and waited for the email notification.

  After receiving the email message that “import was complete”, I opened the “old” website and refreshed the category page and…

  All the categories were there! I deleted all of them, created new categories without any of the previous issues, and so far so good.

  Anyone know what’s going on? I doubt my export had anything to do with it… ;-)
