Categorising Blog Posts
-
Hi,
I changed the theme of my blog over the weekend, and I’m wanting the new posts that go up to appear in the categories in the drop down boxes at the top of my header. I know it can be done, because a blog I follow happens to have the same theme, and has the same outcome that I’m looking for.
As far as I can tell, I’ve set the Menu correctly – in that I have the pages showing and the categories listed underneath, but I can’t figure out why the posts are not showing in the category page. They are posting directly to the blog, which is good, but not to the category.
Anyone have any ideas as to where I might have gone wrong? My blog is http://www.writinginshadows.co if you want to have a look. I’m fairly certain my explanation of the problem is not all that helpful.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You’ve confused static page with categories. Categories are not pages, and not only do you not have to create static pages to contain posts of a certain category, but you can not do so.
I’ll point out some errors:
1. http://writinginshadows.com/book-reviews/ is the URL of a static page. It’s not a category. However, the link to it in your menu goes to the homepage, the posts page. I’m not sure why. Perhaps you have that page assigned as both your front page and your posts page at Settings > Reading, so WP doesn’t know where to direct the link to the page, and defaults to the homepage.
2. http://writinginshadows.com/book-reviews/cozy-mysteries/ is a static page which is a child of the static page “Book Reviews.” It’s not a category.
3. http://writinginshadows.com/book-reviews/drama/ is another child of the static page “Book Reviews,” and is not a category.
etc. Here’s a support page on Category Pages: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/. I think that if WP called them dynamic Category Archives Pages it might help to differentiate them more clearly from static pages. Category Pages are created automatically by creating posts and assigning categories to them. You can then create custom menus which consist of links to those dynamic, automatically created pages.
A subcategory is created at the Categories page (dashboard admin panel > Posts > Categories) by assigning a one category as the parent of another category. Category items and subcategory items in a custom menu both link to category archives pages, which display posts assigned to those categories and subcategories, respectively.
Let me know if you understand the basic points I’ve outlined above. I know it can be confusing. If you don’t follow my explanation, let me know where the difficulty lies and I’ll try again.

Here is your “Book Reviews” category page URL: http://writinginshadows.com/category/book-reviews/.
If “Drama” is a subcategory of “Book Reviews” the subcategory page URL would be http://writinginshadows.com/category/book-reviews/drama/. But that page doesn’t exist, which suggests that you haven’t assigned “Drama” as a subcategory of “Book Reviews” at the categories page.
Also, http://writinginshadows.com/category/drama/ does not exist, which indicates that “drama” has not been added as a category to any published post.

Thanks so much musicdoc1, I wish I’d thought to post this here Saturday and Sunday rather than pull out 2 of the remaining 4 hairs on my head lol. I deleted the menu and redid a new one, with the pages Book Reviews, Film Reviews & Features and then put the categories under them in the menu. I’d done all of them as pages. Now it works.
I really appreciate your help. I’m such a clutz when it comes to technology. No more revamping my blog, ever.
