Categorize blog posts

Hi there! I’m new to WordPress and have a question. With the theme I chose, I have three blog posts highlighted. If you visit my blog, you’ll see that they’re called “Crackered,” “Why You Shouldn’t Give Up,” and “Embrace the Suck.” As I’ve had readers give me feedback, one thing I’ve heard repeated is that those should be categories for individual blog posts. So, I’d like the titles of the blog posts to stay the same but have the content change. Does anyone know how I’d set that up? Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.

If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
See this support document on the differences between pages and posts. At wordpress.com, you organize posts by categorizing them and you can create a custom menu and add the categories into the custom menu.
We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.
A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or Tags pages and/or Custom Links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide.

Categories/Tags can only be assigned to posts, not to pages.

I use Twenty Eleven and have six main Categories and a number of subcategories listed under them. On my blog page, all the Categories are listed as main Categories. What is the point of having made “parent” pages with subcategories under them if they all list as parent categories on my page? I certainly don’t want to have so many categories listed.

No, I do not want to create sub-menus, I want to create sub-categories. I did create sub-categories in the Categories section, with dashes. But on my blog, they show as main categories instead of sub-categories under their parent category.

It would ne helpful if you posted an active link starting with http:// to the blog you are working on. I use the same theme on two blogs and have custom menus with categories and dropdowns to sub-categories on both.
1.You add the Categories you want to display to the custom menu and arrange them in the order you want.

You can also disable this on the Menus page on the top right hand side

My Categories are listed on the right sidebar, not under a menu. Perhaps this is the problem?

It sounds like your are using a categories widget. It would be helpful if you posted an active link starting with http:// to the blog you are working on because wiithout being able to see the blog and what you have done I can’t offer you more help. You can change the blog visibility setting ie. privacy setting from private to public.

Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog so it can be instantly located > Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Primary Blog‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.
Then every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

P.S.: “Primary Blog” is not under Account Details, but is listed above it.

I did create sub-categories in the Categories section, with dashes.
Forget the dashes please. I see you are using a Categories widget. Category parent – If you want to nest a category within a category, select the parent category. Otherwise leave at None. To create sub-categories see these instructions:

The way you suggest is the way I created them–by selecting the parent categroy. The dashes came up automatically. Only they did not show on my actual blog page.

I like having my Categories handy on my blog page, but if this doesn’t work out, at least you have given me the idea of having them on a separate page under a Menu. Not all is lost. Thanks.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to.
http://hgsurvivor.wordpress.com/ is not using Twenty Eleven and only has one category, “Uncategorized”.
