Hello there. The instructions for assigning Categories to posts are found in the support documentation http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-categories/
The other support documentation links that also relate to Categories are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=categories -
A blog is not a website In a true blog one can posts new posts only to a single page. If you wish to set up your blog like a website then you can do this via workarounds. However, previous to using them it’s important that you understand what a static page is and how it differs from a post. This entry describes what static Pages are http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ This entry describes the differences between posts and static page, which are http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

We have one theme that allows for Categories to be displayed across the horizontal tabs where static Pages are usually found in a blog. > Appearance > Themes > inove > Activate
Here is a review of other features that theme has, including the ability to prevent sidebars displaying on pages we select http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/08/16/review-of-the-wordpress-com-inove-theme/

Thanks for the info. Is there anyway I can hide the posts so its not just a long page of all my posts but instead you have to click something where all the posts related to the subject are grouped together?
-
If you do not wish to change themes then there is a “trick”that can be used on some themes to achieve the website look and you want your category tabs in the header instead of the sidebar http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/
-
If you click the link I supplied immediately above (page tabs as external links) you will find that the “trick” will not work if you wish to continue to use the Chaos Theory theme (column 3). You must choose a theme in the first column (column 1) on the left if you wish to use this “trick”.

This is all so new to me so I am a little confused. Currently I switched the theme which you have provided but I’m not sure how to get the categories on the top in a horizontal fashion. Currently it is the pages that are displayed at the top. Correct me if I am wrong in my assumption, but from what I understand there isn’t an available way in which I can categorize posts in tabs unless they are pages, is that correct?

Until you have actually created posts and assigned to those posts and published them there will be no Categories data to display.

Drat! I missed a word above. My reply should have read:

Alright, I just published a post with “Poems” as the category what should I do at this point?
-
Adter there is data for the Category to display it will display on top provided you do this > Appearance > Themes > iNove Theme Options
Menubar ___ Show pages as menu. ___ Show categories as menu.
Choose to checkmark ” ___ Show categories as menu” and then click “Save Changes”
-
All the selections for the iNove Theme Options are found on this page > Appearance > Themes > iNove Theme Options
You will have to carefully read the review and make your choices on that Page.

Thank you very much, this is exactly what I wanted. I really appreciate the help. My only other question is if it is possible to remove the posts from being shown on the homepage?
-
Yes, you can create a static front page . The instructions for doing so are found here in the support documentation http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
You are on a learning curve here so please bookmark this thread so you can return to it when required. Please also bookmark the link to support documentation as well http://en.support.wordpress.com/
Happy blogging! :)
