Categorizing Posts in columns

  On many other wordpress blogs with multiple column themes, I have seen posts organized by categories. More specifically, all posts of a certain category would be displayed in one column on the main page of the blog, and each other category would have it’s own column. I have been all through the dashboard, and I haven’t been able to find a way to do this. Is there a section I’m missing, or does it require some kind of code?

  Can’t be done at wordpress.COM. That is a capability built into some themes for self-hosted blogs and there are no themes here that have that feature.
