Category Archive

    Hi,
    I’m currently using Newsworthy Theme.

    1) I have created two category archives titled “Recent Posts” and “What’s Coming Up”. The issue I have is that this page looks different from the rest of the pages and I would like it to look like a normal page but still have the function of the archive widget (index to months). How can I have this?

    2) How can I remove the sidebars?

    3) How do I limit the number of archives in a page, say i would like only 10 of it?

    3) How can I have this page appear to have excerpts/summary rather than a full list of it?

    4) On a list of archives, there isn’t any break in between. How can i have a line cut across each archived posts?

    Thanks.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Please ignore my question on the sidebars. Decided to maintain it. At least it looks similar to a blog posts.

    Hi there,

    1) I have created two category archives titled “Recent Posts” and “What’s Coming Up”. The issue I have is that this page looks different from the rest of the pages and I would like it to look like a normal page but still have the function of the archive widget (index to months). I’m not sure I understand what you are wanting on the Recent Posts widget. It is designed to show your X most recent posts regardless of category. When a title in that widget is clicked on, it takes you to that single post page so that you can view and read it. It isn’t really an “Archive” as such.

    If you wish to show the recent posts only from a certain category, my suggestion would be to use a Text widget and insert the Display Posts Shortcode into that widget. As an example, this would create a list of up to 5 posts from your Recent Posts Category.

    [display-posts category="recent-posts" posts_per_page="5"]

    To use the above, add a text widget to your sidebar and then copy the above and paste it into the content area on that text widget. You can do the same for your “What’s Coming Up” category using the above as a guide.

    3) How do I limit the number of archives in a page, say i would like only 10 of it?

    The “blog”, category, tag and archive pages show the number of posts that you have set at Settings > Reading unless you have Infinite Scroll enabled. With Infinite Scroll enabled, it will load 7 posts, then when a visitor gets near the bottom of that page, the system will load 7 more posts and continue like that until it loads all of the posts you have.

    4) On a list of archives, there isn’t any break in between. How can i have a line cut across each archived posts?

    Are you talking about on like on this page http://pkhcambodia.org/2015/10/?

    Thanks for the quick feedback.

    1) I’m aware of the recent posts widget. I’m referring to having a category under the menu which is meant to mimic that of in the recent posts sidebar/widget. In short, the outlook of it is completely different and I wish to have the sidebar (recent posts) to be part of the sub-menu above. I’ve used category archive to create a sub-menu above but outlook is different to that in the widget.

    4) I meant, after every post, it looks like it’s continual rather than separated. So thought having a line break in between each posts would be good rather.

    I think I understand now. We cannot add widgets to the menu, or mimic the behavior of the Recent Posts widget in the menu. That would require editing of the theme files and some tricky Javascript, and we cannot add Javascript here at WordPress.com for security reasons.

    On the posts in archives, we can add a bottom borderline to them with the following. See if this is what you are looking for.

    .archive .post {
        border-bottom: 2px solid #000;
    }
